It was my privelege to be invited to the annual dinner of the Worshipful Company of Tobacco Pipe Makers and Tobacco
Blenders. The dinner was held at the exquisite Mansion House in the city of London. In the presence of the Lord Mayor, a wonderful toast
was proposed by Dr Mary Archer (wife of Lord Jeffery Archer)
This really was an evening of wonderful pomp and ceremony, including a carpet guard, the smoking cap ceremony as well as the loving cup!
Music was provided by John Lofthouse-Baratone and Christopher Ward on piano.
The splendid meal included roast fillet of scottish beef madagascar with a cream sauce, flavoured with green peppercorns and armagnac.
Delightful wines, ports and armagnac as well as El Rey Del Mundo Havanas accompanied.
Today, Livery Companies maintain many of the traditions of the past and provide substantial charitable help to many other
organisations and individuals. The first company of tobacco pipe makers was granted a charter by James I in 1619. The second
company with a charter of incorporation was granted by Charles II in 1663. The company was revivied in 1954.
The El Rey Del Mundo cigars offered at the dinner were a little mild for my taste, but fortunately I had bought my own ready supply
of Bolivar Belicosos which paired up to perfection with the Smith Woodhouse Port.
