How soon can a cigar develop mold.

I just received an order from JRcigars.com on last Friday (7/11/08). It was a sampler pack containing 8 brands and a JR alternative to each, so 16 in total in a travel humi. After a received them I placed them in my own humidor. At that day the humidor was at 70% which I will lower soon. But today I opened it this morning and noticed that it was raising a bit and is now at about 74% rH. So i was looking at them to decide which I wanted to take with my on an excursion this afternoon and came across a JR that has some green spots on the wrapper.(kind of like on the inside).

My question is, Did JR's send me a bad batch and should i contact them about it. Or is it my fault and a cigar can develop mold in only a couple days. Or is this discoloration normal among some sticks?

Pics. and sorry for them being so big. Better detail.

And what would you recommend to keep this humidity balanced. I am using a 70% PG pre-mixed solution.

For what its worth....

I recently got a vino temp
I placed sticks in and no problemo

I have a 05 Punch ISOM that was gifted to me. I placed it in its own coffin box and placed it in the vinotemp.

2 weeks later I wanted to look at that beauty and found the thing dripping wet. I MEAN DRIPPING WET!!!

I placed it in an old Rockey Patel box on its own and placed it back in the vino temp.

No mold it looks fine.

Like I said, for what its worth

yeah, for some reason I don't think it can acquire mold THAT fast. especially how much there is. Also my rH % was still going up for some reason. I only moved the humi to a different room on the same level of the house. It was about 76-8% so I moved into the fridge and let it go down a bit. Then i changed the humidifier to the one that I received in the travel humi.

Based on those photos, that's not mold. Mold has texture and is raised. Those spots look like they are actually a part of the wrapper. That's something I've rarely seen on nc's, but frequently on cc's. I don't think you have anything to worry about.

edit to add: If you still have some concerns, just keep that cigar segregated from the rest of your sticks and observe it over time. You'll definitely notice any additional growth, however I don't suspect you'll see any.

Mold is three dimensional, and fluffy. It's typically white, rarely but sometimes a blue-green color. That ain't mold, it's wrapper discoloration.

Edit - here's what mold looks like:

being in the food industry, the short 2 year stint it was, I have learned what mold looked like. :sign:

I was just unsure of what a actual moldy cigar looked like.

So it is one the outside that the cigar mold is that grows? And not right below the wrapper layer. Good to know. I think I might still keep it away.

Just in Case.

You got some got advice but you are still going to keep them away ???

Just wondering why you asked :sign:

That's not mold as the good brothers have alluded to.

Biggestmexi,
What is it that you are trying to accomplish here? You have asked two questions now that you could have answered for yourself with a litte research. Then you got excellent answers in both threads from guys like Ginseng, Blinded by Science, and Infinity who probably know more about cigars than most cigar manufacturers, and when they tried to give you some gentle prodding to follow the rules and expectations of this forum, you came back with smart ass comments and insults. I know you "come from much harsher boards than this" but you haven't been to better or more well informed website. Please check your attitude a little bit, and follow the advice that has been given to you. This is a great place if you choose to be part of the community that is established, but if you choose to be an asshat, guys like Devil Doc are going to use you like a chew toy.

The decisions is yours, choose well.

If you put take cigars from a 75% rh humidor (these cigars would have a fairly high moisture content) and place them into a lower 65-70 rh desk top humidor, those Cigars will raise the humidity.
I.e., being hygroscopic, they will act as humidifiers.

That said, one of the reasons I hate ordering anything from JR is that I used to get way overhumidified cigars from them. Would take months for them to become smokeable. More so from Boxes than fivers.

I have read quite a bit about cigars before I really got into them and never really ran across wrapper discoloration. I only received excellent answers after most of the people were being rather tool like. "Gentle prodding" so what, because people have been on the this board longer mean they can do it but I can not? Rules do go both ways. And I haven been to many well informed websites. And please with the chewtoy thing its kinda too e-thug for me. I know you are trying to scare me but its the internet. There is no real reason to try to act macho here. Its people with a common habit and all I do is ask simple questions. It is really not hard to just give me an answer. Thats all I ask and all I needed. I would not have started anything if that would have happen. And I believe my first post in everything I that I started was rather nice per say.

I was unsure of what JR's humidity was at there warehouse so thank you. I will learn from that. What would you recommend to do with these If I were to order more from them? That is before I put them in the humidor.

and see a nice question.

I wasn't, and am not, trying to be macho or an e-thug (whatever the hell that is) I'm just trying to help you from getting run off from here. I'm just letting you know that in this particular forum it is not appreciated when you ask a question, get your answer, and then start calling names and making smart-ass rude comments to respected members here. Yes, it is okay for them to do that because they helped build this site into what it is, and have earned the right to be tough on new members until they know what that persons intentions are. I made my mistakes, and opened my mouth when I shouldn't when I first started here, and I was given the proper "nudging" as well. I took the advice I was given and used to help fit into this community.

Proper grammer, capitalization, and punctuation is expected here. It's not to much to ask. Being respectful of the established members is not only good form here, but anywhere in my opinion. As for me asking you to not insult the members here, it's not me being a bully or an ethug, it's just me trying to help out a new guy so that they can fit in here and hopefully stick around and establish yourself as a good member. If you feel insulted or threatened by me, well I'm pretty much a pushover, so it could be a rough ride for you.

Bull. You received perfectly acceptable, perfectly accurate answers right up to the point where you posted this:

So, you know what mold looks like, but didn't know what it looked like on a cigar? The photo didn't help?

What are you trying to achieve here? If you're not a troll, you are darn sure acting like one. Comments like "And please with the chewtoy thing its kinda too e-thug for me. I know you are trying to scare me but its the internet." really make me think your only purpose here is to stir up crap.

Come, go, stay, leave....whatever. If your purpose is to become a good member of the fourms....well, you have a ways to go. Got to say, at this point, I don't believe it.

In which thread did this happen in this order?

Yes, it is okay for them to do that because they helped build this site into what it is
No I don't think it is. I can understand if I was ignorant in my topic starters but I was not.

And most of the comments were un-provoked. So much for this being the Friendliest place on the internet.

Oh btw i am not and ethug either. I just don't get "nudged" well

Well I'm sorry cupcake, if you can't take what you dished, then go cry somewhere else... :)

:hug hug: :coddle coddle:

You came on here, disrespected guys I look up to like Tom and Brian, and now you're crying that we're not the friendliest community. You don't like it, and don't want to man up and apologize and start fresh, then feel free to go elsewhere please.

its funny because i posted that before you put the picture up. and there was only two answers. One was yourself. The others wasnt completely solid. I mean if you are going to make a point like that you should get your information straight. This is the only info I received before I posted that.

""Based on those photos, that's not mold. Mold has texture and is raised. Those spots look like they are actually a part of the wrapper. That's something I've rarely seen on nc's, but frequently on cc's. I don't think you have anything to worry about.

And then what you typed.

from "infinity":
You got some got advice but you are still going to keep them away
see above underlined.

souldog24ca, your a cutie pie

Also I was unsure if mold could grow on the inside of the wrapper and not just the outside. so please you guys should really just stop thread crapping and stay on topic.

Really, biggestmexi, it comes down to the fact that you're coming into an established forum and trying to change the way things are done, and that's just not appropriate. If you don't like the status quo then find another forum that you like better, there's really no reason to stay.
