I ask for help for my family.....

It is with a heavy heart that I bring this request to my fellow CP'ers. Earlier this week my bother and his wife were given the final diagnosis for their 14 month old son. He is said to have "Tay Sachs Disease". ( Tay Sachs Disease ) This link will explain a bit better than I am able to.

While it appears tragic, I believe in my heart, it will be better for them in the long run. The baby will not suffer for years and years and they will not have to endure the heartache of seeing their son in pain. :(

If this were for me, I would not be asking. However, for my brother, sister-in-law and the rest of my family, I ask your prayers and blessings. They are going to need help in the near future to make it through these tough times and see the light ( as dim as it may seem) at the end of the tunnel.

Floyd, I'm deeply saddened by this news. You can rest assured that your brother and his family will be in my thoughts and prayers.

I had never heard of this disease until a couple of weeks ago when I was watching Nova. The episode was on genetic research and the mapping of the human genome. Tay-Sachs was used as an example of a genetic disease that prospective parents could be screened for someday as a result of this research. It is caused by a single defect in the DNA of the parents and both parents have to have the defect in order for the child to develop the disease. It just amazed me that one single error could cause something so catastrophic. Babies born with this disease lack a protein (an enzyme) that is responsible for breaking down fat in the brain. The fat builds up and eventually the pressure causes the brain to start to malfunction and eventually shut down.

Floyd, it's going to be hard for everybody involved, but somebody has to be the rock. That somebody is you, my friend. May you have the strength and courage you need to face this and be the foundation your brother and his wife need to get through it. Good luck and when you need to blow off some steam, feel free to post here or e-mail me or whatever it takes. May God bless you all.

I would like to extend a huge THANK YOU to everyone who has posted. To know there are many, many thoughts and prayers floatin' around out there, I know the best thing will happen. I know, after all of the dust settles, the joy my nephew has brought to his parents will shine through.

I'm not the most religious man on the planet, however, I do know GOD does things for a reason. My family will benefit from this in some fashion. GOD is a stinker sometimes though! :D

My thoughts and prayers are with your family. I did not know how to respond to this because I am looking at my four week old right now and dont like to think how fragile life is. We should all be thankful for what we have and cherish our loved ones. Maybe things happen to remind us of this.
 
hey horse, i am ignorant as to computers, can you tell me how to play your song, listed above in the thread, and floyd, we are still praying for you man, let us know if there is anything we can do to help, i know that sounds shallow, but i think this bunch would sure try to help if they could at all,
