I'm looking to find out if anyone here knows where I can find out info as to how many cigar smokers there are in the US (approx). Also, I'd like to know a regional breakdown and a breakdown as far as political affiliation. This info is for research purposes. I've emailed the usual organizations for this type of info and haven't gotten a response. If anyone knows where I can find this info, please let me know by posting. Your help is greatly appreciated.

My wife is a librarian, so I'll sic her on the project. I can't promise anything, but I'm sure she'll be glad to give it a shot. I'll let you know if she comes up with anything.

The Helper Monkey says:

I went to our latest copy of Statistical Abstract of the United States 2008-09 (also available online if your friend needs it) and the latest table they had on cigar smokers was from 2006. I went to the link associated with the table and found some 2007 data online. There are several charts on cigar demographics (but nothing quite like what he's looking for i.e. political affiliation) in both the 2007 Tobacco Use data and also the Special Reports on Tobacco.

I'll do some more looking.

Stat Abs estimates about 4.6% of the U.S. population smokes cigars regularly, so you could go to http://www.census.gov/ , get a figure of what the current U.S. population is, and then take 4.6% for a number. This figure held steady from 2002 to 2006, so it's probably accurate.

Another tidbit from THM:

There's been a lot written and on state smoking cessation program success rates based on political affiliation of the individual states' governors, but only speculative, fluffy opinion pieces as to the political affiliation of cigar smokers. Not surprisingly, the overwhelming assumption is that they are conservatives.

Perhaps the best way to come up with some numerical data for this query would be to look at individual state censuses, get a figure for cigar smokers (I'm not sure if this is possible b/c in the state censuses, they might lump all tobacco use together--I honestly don't know), then weigh the figures based on red state/blue state status. It's not a perfect method, but it would allow this person to draw some conclusions based in some form of calculation.

wow lots and lots of information from that site. One thing I get from it is, you older fugglers need to get smoking. Younger guns are out pacing you guys.

More from the missus (the formatting is a little goofy from multiple copying and pasting):

I was able to pull cigar smoker data by state from the CDCs database, but, the most current numbers I could pull were from 2003. Nevertheless, it gives you %. It's hard to find this type of data. Just about everything focuses on cigarette smoking or smokeless tobacco.
