In Defense of Smokers

Well in all fairness nicotine is addictive. I recall proving this in my own non scientific I’m an idiot study. Basically I was visiting some friends, got really drunk and for some reason thought it would be a good idea to go to the bar. Well we got there had a few more, by this point I was really, really drunk. I’m sitting there and I see a guy smoking a cigar, hey ya know what I really want something to smoke. But A’ last no cigars on me. Nooo. Bartender hands me a pack of marb reds. “Hey good man”. So I begin puffing, senses totally numb to the taste. Kept drinking, and after that it’s a little hazy. Well needless to say the next day I work up around 2 in the afternoon, sick as can be, couldn’t remember anything at all about the night before but I had a crazy craving for a cig. I don’t know why, I really couldn’t remember smoking them at all. I found the empty pack in the pocket later that day. So I would say as far as cigarettes are concerned there is something addictive.

Just my little story.

I was addicted to cigarettes. I had to have one when I felt the urge...Usually to the tune of two packs per day. I've been off em for 22 years.

I can go days without a cigar...No problem. When I want one...Like right now...I have to have one. It's the same feeling.

Going to satisfy my addiction...Later guys.

Addicting....probably. But - the "no smoking" bans are out of control. Here in WA state now, you can't smoke in a public building....anywhere. Can't smoke in cigar lounges, cigar stores, 21 only bars....nowhere. Not even within 25' of the front door, or any HVAC intakes.

Well...except the Indian casinos..... :angry2:

I try to have this little "I'm not addicted to cigar" talk with people all the time. For some reason my non-smoking friends don't believe that this is possible. I totally agree with cigarsarge on the going days without a cigar. If I want one I have one. Kind of like a sandwich, if I am in the mood I have one. Whatever.

On that note I find cigarette smoke disgusting. Cigar smoke has a complex a flavorful aroma, cigarettes smell like a tire fire. After discussing this with our local bar, they decided that we could smoke cigars there. Fun to win the argument every now and then.

Well said Tony. I can go days (and sometimes a week or more) without smoking a cigar, and feel no "have to have one" type feeling. At times where I haven't gotten to smoke in more than 4 or 5 days, the "want" is definitely there. "Need" and "want" are clearly distinguished in my life in regards to cigars. Let us define want as the pursuit of a pleasureable activity. This is what I tell people who are uneducated of my cigar smoking tendancies, and often assume that I'm some addicted nicotine fiend. My statements usually end with "When I smoke cigars, I do so becuase I WANT to, not because I need to."

I hope smoking bans like that of Washington never hit Missouri... ???
