On this day in 1968, Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee, where he had gone to support the city's sanitation workers in their strike for better working conditions. The night before he died, he gave a speech at the Memphis Temple Church in which he said, "I've seen the promised land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight that we, as a people, will get to the Promised Land."

Doc.

What an absolutely amazing man , who was taken from us way to early.

What a great loss.... there have been very few figures of leadership that exhibited Dr. King's combination of qualities throughout this country's entire history.

A great man with an amazing ability to inspire many, including myself, who never lived in his lifetime. He made this country a far better place for everyone to live in.

At his best, he was the most inspiring speakers I have ever heard. His death was a great loss to us all.

1968 was a terrible year in our history with Dr. Martin Luther King murdered in April and Robert F. Kennedy murdered in June and then the nightmare of the Chicago Democratic Convention later that summer. May we never see such dark times again.

Truely one of the great Americans.

I heard twice today on radio reports that he was shot on the evening of April 4th. I guess I was always under the impression that it was in the morning. Anyone know for sure?

The Reverend Doctor King's tragic death occurred about 5:45 PM.
The world is a less inspired place since he was stolen from us all.

What a great American he was, and his dream is stll alive. Unfortunately, far too many have let that flame die for profit and fame.

He was a great man who still affects us all. God bless!
