I know there are a few ink aficionados on here. Anyone watch Ink Master? I haven't watched in quite a few seasons, since I am not a big fan of "reality shows", but this season my very good friend's brother, Christian Buckingham is on there. He did one of the tattoos on my inner arm a bunch of years ago. I haven't really had a chance to watch this season so far, but I'm hoping he does well.

If anyone watches, throw some support to Christian.

I've watched all of the prior seasons. It's a decent way to learn what to look for in a good artist and figure out the options when it comes to a custom tattoo. I got a 1/2 sleeve done a couple of years ago and so was pretty obsessed with everything tattoo on tv. This was the only show I could stand to watch. The current season is on TiVO. I'll watch it when I get back on the treadmill to start training again. Mindless entertainment.

I was actually watching it last night. Entertaining for sure. I have one small piece on my right inside forearm. Definitely want more, just something I think very carefully about.

Christian is the one with the swirly tribal stuff on his face. Yeah, you pretty much better make it in the tattoo business at that point...

The thing I don't like about Ink Master, besides the little Danny Trejo Jr. with the toothpick, is that the show is not representative of the artists' true work. They are rushed and under pressure, which sometimes turns out great stuff, but mostly results in a rushed job that has lots of errors that the artist otherwise wouldn't make. Their portfolios show that. I caught the end of last night, and I remember Clean from the last one I watched. I stopped watching because he was clearly the best all season, bit the other little troll in the finals with him who got by on luck every week with some crappy stuff, did his final one more "in the style" they were looking for, though it was a far, far inferior piece. It was strange to see Clean with such a shoddy piece of work last night, which just reinforces what I said above. It's not representative of their own regular work... just entertainment.

I've got a good amount of work and have watched most of the tattoo reality shows. I think they have started to get more actual artists vs. lunatics who just want to be on tv. Tattooists generally have some big egos, so some drama is expected, but the level of freaks they've had on before made the show a good way to weed out potential artists for future work.

I agree that they put them at an unrealistic disadvantage for the sake of competition, which would be ok if they were just burning a cake.....can you imagine being a "human canvas" for a guy who specializes in traditional being forced to do photo-realistic? The worst would be sitting on the himan canvas jury arguing about who is stuck with the biggest piece of crap for the rest of their life.

I wouldn't go as far as to say I'm good friends with Christian, but I've hung out with him several times in relaxed settings at my friend Alex's house, as well as out in public at a convention and around town. He's totally NOT the Alpha Male Tattoo Guy he's portraying himself as on the show. But, that's what it takes for compelling TV, I guess, and it appears he's doing a masterful job at it. I've still only seen that one little bit of the one episode, but his brother says he's doing great on there... and agrees that it's all just for good television.
