Does anyone know of any good/rare Japanese market bourbons/whiskey or other type drinks that you would purchase if you were there?

After living there for 13 years, I came to the conclusion that while they make damn good whisky, the national drink is Sake, or Shochu. Sake is made from rice, while shochu is made from a variety of things, from potato to buck wheat. The main difference is that shochu is distilled, while sake is not. I was not a sake drinker, but I'll tell ya, the more you spend the better is it (some of them are sweet and smooth like water). On the flip side, a 300.00 bottle will be wasted on the American brought up on Big Macs and Bud. As far as bourbon/whisky, knock a few back and get the one that tickles your tonsils the best. Sorry nothing specific. Have fun up there.

I would pick up a bottle or two of Suntory Yamazaki (spelling?) single malt. I've only ever found/had it in 12 yr old version. I really like some of the japanese whiskeys that are out there - This one tastes (to me) like a cross between a sweeter irish whiskey and an islay scotch.

Cheers,

Any in the first part of this thread are available in Japan and not in the US. If you find some let me know and we'll see if we can't work out a deal.

I have a cousin who is heading out to Japan tomorrow for a 2 year stay and he and I both enjoy good bourbon. When he gets their and is able to leave base he is going to start shopping for me and sending things back.

Being in Kentucky and visiting Louisville and Lexington almost on a monthly basis I can get almost everything made for the domestic market. So I am going to try some different things

Where is he goig... I live here now (on Okinawa)

I'm already taking stock of the local stores to look for some of the "only in Japan" stuff.

Okinawa...he should be there now. He is supposed to call when he gets settled in.

Its funny he got married Sat and left Sun. morning so he said on the way to the airport he had to stop at the hospital for her......

Well.... I've lived here for four years.... pass him my info and tell him to contact me if he needs any help getting settled, finding stuff or just wants to hang out. I can show him the (as in only) Cigar shop I've found, if he's into stogies too...
