Just a heads up for anyone who's contemplating purchasing a few "specials" from JR in order to get the 10 cigar special with the $10 Altadis discount card. I grabbed 4 of those specials and got 4 cards which I intended to use towards a box of RyJ's today. Not a bad deal for 4 bucks a smoke for what you get, but part of the reason was to get the cash card.

Called today and attempted to buy the box and was told you can only use (1) one card per box, although there is absolutely NOTHING stated on the card that it is only good for one box. It reads as follows:

Redeemable towards any purchase of Montecristo, Trinidad, RyJ, or H. Upmann box of 20 or box of 25 cigars. Expires 12/31/08

Along the bottom it states:

No valid on previous puirchases or in conjunction with any other rewards, discounts or deals. May not be redeemed for cash, etc.

Nowhere on this cards does it state only one card can be used per box. IMO, this should be stated on the card, but then that would cut into the sales of those "specials" to those who are considering using the cards for a future purchase.

Not too happy with them at the moment, and since now I've found several other reputable dealers thru Cigar Pass I believe I'll be taking my business elsewhere. And considering I've been buying from them for years and spend a good buck on smokes per year I consider it a loss for them that they won't honor the cards.

Just my 2 cents.

Support the small guys. There are plenty of them around here offering much better deals.

Before you start slamming JR or Altadis as Scammers; you better be sure that they are. Posting your discontent is one thing but your words echo when you start accusations that may not be warranted.

the legal loophole they are using is
"Not valid on previous purchases or in conjunction with any other rewards, discounts or deals. May not be redeemed for cash, etc."
Each card would be considered another reward, discount or deal

sneaky but legal

Have to agree there, Tim. "Scammish" is a bit visceral for use in context with JR or Altadis. I'll buy misleading, but in truth, I would not have assumed that I could redeem 4 coupons on one box buy.

snip... "Not valid on previous purchases or in conjunction with any other rewards, discounts or deals. May not be redeemed for cash, etc."....snip

That sentence alone tells me I can't use more than 1. I guess it depends on the reader, but to me it wasn't that foggy.

Well by scammish, I meant misleading. My discontent is in no way with Altadis as they are only the cigar manufacturer. I don't know if the 10$ "reward", "discount", or "deal" cards are part of any joint effort between the two or not. I've never seen these offered anywhere but at JR's.

In terms of technicality, the card itself states at the top: Manufacturer's coupon Altadis USA. In that phrase, the device I hold in my hand is termed a "coupon" by Altadis. Not a "reward", "discount" or "deal" card. Nowhere on this card is the holder of this "coupon" informed that it can only be used on a one card per box basis.

My perception of the use of this card from the limitations stated at the bottom of the card is that it cannot be used in conjunction with any offers I've seen on the JR website, such as the Daily deals, Weekly deals, Weekend Warrior specials or any other type of offer I've ever seen on JR's website. After buying $200 worth of sampler cigars and obtaining the coupon card within, I thought it reasonable to assume a $40 credit towards a limited selection of cigars was available by means of purchasing 4 samplers they were offering unsolicited immediately after selecting a weekly deal special. They advertised the deal to me without my asking for it in advance. In fact, nowhere are you able to select the sampler item to purchase individually as it only appears after purchasing other items they are trying to move out the door.

As for it being reasonable to collect them and use them at the same time, I recognized the offer as "buy more samplers and get more off the Altadis item". It was just how the offer and card stuck me in the advertising of it. It's not like I was trying to deliberately fabricate a method to get free cigars. I purchase a bit of tobacco product and have done so for over 15 years, and I don't need a free box of 25 cigars on the cuff bad enough to try scamming for them. It was the way I assumed it to be when I read the card, and when attempted to utilize them all I was told no. End of story. I didn't argue with them or ask for a manager or threaten them to get 40 bucks off a box of smokes. I said OK, and declined to order and politely hung up the phone.

It was when I read the card over and over again that I said, hmmm... why doesn't it say that on the card? Oh well, no big deal, I got some great smokes for a great price. But, I thought maybe if there were others out here that were collecting them as I was doing in the thought that they would all apply to their next purchase I'd let them know before they tried collecting even more than I did and then get told no. The purpose was to be a heads up, as stated in the first line of my post. I didn't say boycott them, sue them, flame them. I said I wan't happy with the situation as it was presented and that there's a bunch more dealers out here that offer the same discounts on the same products as them and I thought it time to take my business elsewhere.

Do I believe the cards are a deliberate deception, no. Do I believe they should more clearly state the limitations of the card, yup. Could they have said, well I see what you mean, I'll have to let them know for future reference, yup. Was I stupid in using the term, scammish to convey my interpretation of the situation, you bet.

I used the words Kinda and ScammISH because I thought the advertising was misdirecting. I retrospect, I could have chosen different words that could have gotten my point across although, there again, what my intent was and how it was precieved are two different things.

That's why we're here tho... info exchange. Thanks for your opinions, I'll definitely choose my words carefully in future posts and take the advice found here with me.

now I have to go answer the door to UPS and get my Patel Sungrown Toros from Famous

edited for a ton of grammatical errors!

If you had four(4) 25 cent off coupons for a can of Jolly Green Giant peas, would you go the market and expect to get a buck off of 1 can?

I am sorry that this did not work out the way you wanted, but I think that it falls into the "if it seems to good to be true..." catagory. I hope you enjoy the smokes that you did get from JR's and like it has been stated there are plenty of smaller shops represented here on CP, that would love to have a chance to do right by you.

edit to fix my quote

Ditto

I'm with you guys. I have one the of these cards, and thought I could only use one card at a time. Depends on the reader, but from past experiences, should probably know that they wont let you pile these on top of one another to get an outrageous deal. Either way, $10 is nice, no?

O definitely enjoying the smokes! In total I picked up 40 assorted for a bit less than 4 bucks each, and most go for double that at the local shop.

As it turns out, with the $10 off, the price comes down to what others are charging for the same box anyway. I did find one place lower, Atlantic, for 119 abox rather than 135 abox. So I gave Atlantic a try.

On another note, what's going on with the Rocky Patel line lately? Everyone's discounting them pretty decently I notice. I just got Toro Sun Growns and I gotta coupon code for another 20% off?

Coupon code is RPI0508 or RP10508, can't tell which one it is. Famous then does free shipping on the toros with that coupon and you get box of 90 or 92's for 119 at your door.
