I used to drink Macallan 12 with just about every cigar I smoked. Later I got on a bourbon kick and started drinking a lot of Buffalo Trace. Since I've always liked rum, I found some Ron Zacapa Centenario 23 which I love alone, but don't particularly enjoy with a cigar. Earlier this year I went on vacation to Belize and found a new drink I really enjoy. I stayed at a hotel that only served spirits made in Belize. The rum based drinks I had were great, but I never had the rum neat. On my way home, I bought a bottle of the Travellers One Barrel Rum at the airport. I've had a few glasses since I've been home, and I was very surprised. It is unlike any rum I've ever had. It doesn't seem to be a super premium rum, but it also doesn't have a lot of exposure. The finish is soft and sweet. After having my first glass I went to check the proof on the bottle. It had so little bite, I figured it must be less than 80 proof. I taste carmel, vanilla, and more molasses flavor than is typical. To confirm the gentle finish, I had my girlfriend taste the rum neat (she will sip scotch and bourbon straight, but will cringe when she tastes the heat/bite of the alcohol). She drank the rum, didn't cringe, and then asked what is was. This rum was not easy for me to find, but if you ever order from internetwines.com I'd suggest you give it a shot. The other link is the website of the US distributor. It has some info about other places to find it, and some reviews. If you've ever had it, or read this and try it, I'd love to know what you think.
