We just had two young "salesmen" at our door selling magazine subscriptions representing a company called United Circulation Group. They claimed to be raising money for a University of Iowa trip to England to work for the BBC. (First red flag went up). They said that even if we didn't like any of the magazines we could still get a one year subscription and send the magazine to Camp Wolverine in Baghdad. (Second red flag went up). We told him no and he gave a smart-allecky response and left. The only info on Camp Wolverine I found says it is located in Kuwait. Is there somehow I can check the authenticity of his claims with the military? If that is true, I would be happy to send something to the troops but if it is just being used to play on people's emotion, then I pray I don't see that kid again. Any information someone could pass my way would be appreciated. If this kid turns out to be less than straight forward, is there any recourse I could take to ensure that he stops misrepresenting what he's doing? Thanks.

I have had this happen to me on several occasions. Both times I felt really sketchy about these kids. I think you did the right thing by saying no, as I sincerely feel these are complete scams. There really isn't anything legitimate about door to door magazine subscriptions to raise money, especially for a large university. I've ever heard of people doing this then overtaking the person at the door and robbing them/and or hurting them. Not a good situation.

I haven't done any research online but I spent a year in Baghdad and I've never heard of Camp Wolverine.

That's about all I can tell ya bro.

I just came from over there not too long ago. I was off the coast of Kuwait for the majority of time that I was in the Gulf, and I don't remember ever interfacing with a Camp Wolverine. Not to say that it doesn't exist...but I personally did not see it anywhere. I'm in Brickhouse's boat here.

Edit: to add some info. :)

If you want to send soldiers stuff use this site. www.anysoldier.com

You go on there and pick a soldier and send them stuff that they need. I did it a few months ago.

Like Ray said... its closed.

Here is a helpful link regarding military bases inside and outside of CONUS.

*edit* What magazines were the kids hawking?

They had two lamenated sheets listing just about every magazine I know of. They were names you would recognize like Sports Illustrated, Guns and Ammo, Better Homes and Garden, etc. The magazines weren't what raised my suspicion, it was their mannerisms and the "reasons" for selling. I'm going to call the company they claim to represent and the police this morning. I have no problem with a college kid earning summer money by selling magazines, but to lie like this is unacceptable in my book. Thanks all for the input, it is greatly appreciated.

I went through Camp Wolvie on my first trip to Iraq. It was at the time a short term in-country inprocessing stop. I was there for about 6 hours before I moved on.

If you happened to get the name of the group you could pass it it on to your local police as a fraud alert.
