Got this email sent yesterday to me by Nat's, thought I'd pass it along. Can't imagine their store anywhere else than it's been, but we'll see what the future holds...sounds promising:
Nat Sherman to Relocate Landmark New York Tobacco Store to More Luxurious Quarters on Fifth Avenue
NEW York, NY – (March 27, 2007) --- Nat Sherman, the world-wide tobacco and accessories company, has announced that it will be moving its landmark New York retail store to more luxurious quarters on the corner of Fifth Avenue and 42nd Street early this summer. The announcement confirms rumors that have been circulating in New York for the past few months.
The new location, 12 East 42nd Street in mid-town Manhattan, is on the southeast corner of Fifth Avenue and 42nd Street, cattycorner from the current store at 500 Fifth Avenue.
According to Joel Sherman, President of the company and the son of founder Nat Sherman, “Even though the company had an option to remain in its present location, the opportunity to relocate to a larger, free-standing building was impossible to resist. We also wanted to remain in the same general neighborhood, so when we saw the possibilities in the new building for creating a grand and unique new Nat Sherman experience for our customers, we jumped at the chance.
“We view our selection of this new store and location as a reaffirmation of our family’s 76-year-long commitment to New York City and to remaining a New York institution,” he concluded.
With approximately 5700 square feet on three floors, the new store will have more retail selling space than the current one. In addition, the 30 foot ceilings on the ground floor and the fact that it is a stand-alone building will enable the architects to create an outside façade that will be far larger and more luxurious than was possible in the current building.
The new location will also feature a larger climate controlled “humidor room,” where clients can store their cigars in private lockers.
“We continue having a waiting list of cigar smokers who desire lockers,” said Margery Dine, Director of Retail Operations. “The new facility will allow us to accommodate them more comfortably.”
Charles McCarry, a noted Hollywood and Broadway set designer, was instrumental in the design of the current store and will be working with Jack A. Michaelson of Design Consortium, an architectural design firm, on the final interior and external look of the new store.
“The combination of these two talents are going to give Nat Sherman a most exciting and distinct showplace,” said company Executive Vice President Bill Sherman who, along with his brother Larry and sister Michele, represent the third generation of Shermans active in the family business.
The Nat Sherman retail store has been in its current location since 1991. From 1976 to 1991, it was at 711 Fifth Avenue at 55th Street, and prior to that at 1400 Broadway in the Garment District.
Nat Sherman is a family-owned tobacco and accessories business with operations in more than 30 countries. It sells fine cigars and its all natural line of luxury cigarettes, which are manufactured at the company’s own plant in Greensboro, North Carolina.
