My Grandpere's favorite Scotch was Ne Plus Autre and I was trying to find any information on this libation. Is it still available somewhere or do I have the name incorrect? I think it was made by the makers of Dewers. It may have been renamed. Any info is appreciated.

What you are looking for is Dewar's Ne Plus Ultra, I haven't seen a mention of it past 1960 but that doesn't mean it wasn't made a bit longer. I would think that the current Dewar's Special Reserve (12 yo) would be even a better drink since aged scotch wasn't as prevalent in the 50's and 60's.

Is it still available? What is the closest thing to it on the market now? I'm wondering if it was from even earlier than the 50/60s, or an incarnation thereof? I'll try the Dewar's Special Reserve (12 yo). Thanks.

No, it isn't still available and probably hasn't been for at least 20 or more years. The Special Reserve will be a fine substitute.

I bought a bottle of Dewar's Special Reserve two to four years ago and it was a fine drink. In my opinion, its quality is on par with JW Black. I prefer JW Black for the smokier flavor, but if one dislikes that style of whisky the Dewar's 12 is probably right up one's alley. I can't give any specifics as it's just been too long and I don't have my notes, but I remember trying it because I used to drink a lot of Dewar's white label and thinking it was pretty good (before I discoverd that I'm a peat freak).

I know what you mean - I'm working on two fingers of Lagavulin 16 right now. Thanks for the info on the Dewar's 12, I'll give it a shot or two.
