Need a cigar in the same vein as an HDM Excalibur

I have been smoking cigars for about 6 weeks now. I've tried:

RyJ
AF
Baccarat
HDM EX no 1 natural

The AF was spicy, but that was about it. I didn't really enjoy it. The Bacc and Romeo were OK. I hit my stride with the HDM though. It was smooth, creamy, sweet, woody, and slightly leathery all at the same time. The flavor was much more complex than the others. There was some spice about half way through, but not so much that I didn't like it. I don't want to camp out on the HDM's as I've already smoked three and I need to continue developing my pallate.

What should I try next? The local B&M has been very helpful, but the owner isn't as familiar with what's out there as you guys are. I'm staying with affordable sticks at the moment (no more than $10 and preferrably under). What should this newb try next to continue my journey?

The store has tons of AF, a little HDM, Oliva, RyJ, some CAO, and a lot of others I didn't recognize. I didn't see Padron, which I see you guys recommend a lot. I've been searching the forum, but I need some guidance based on what I've tried and like so far. I will definately be signing up for the newb sampler thread in a few months, but money's tight right now so I'm sticking with singles until my finances change (I may be getting a much needed big promotion in a week, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed).

Thanks for your help,
D

Try the Excalibur 1066, same blend as HDM with a Cameroon wrapper, nice taste.

I like La Gloria Cubana Wavells for a cheap, tasty, medium-bodied smoke. They won't knock your socks off, but they are good enough that if I want a $3.00 stick it's almost a toss-up between one of these and a Padron 2000, depending on my mood (the Padrons do have a bit of an advantage). While recognizing that you very likely have different tastes than I (probably a good thing!), I prefer the LGC naturals and the Padron maduros. (I know you said you can't get Padrons at your B&M - that's a real shame as 2000 maddies may be the absolute best bang-per-buck in cigars - you should try to get your tobacconist to order a box).

I have also recently had a few Cuesta Rey Centro Finos that are also very tasty mild sticks. They cost a bit more than the LGCs, at around $5.00 for a robusto, but the ones I've had were all A-1 construction and very flavorful.

If you want to spend a little more, Ashton Heritage Puro Sols are very good and flavorful mild (maybe nudging up on medium) cigars that go for $7.00 or better for the smaller sizes. I also like Avo XO for a mild, smooth, creamy, and wonderfully aromatic cigar.

El Rey del Mundo, Punch, and JR Ultimates are produced in the same factory as the Hoyo's. You might try those. I find them to all be in some ways similar.

2x on the COa Brazilia

Mayorga is a very nice smoke. I prefer the maduros. Wilkey introduce me to these. Very good with coffee.
AVO torpedo maduro
ERDM Robusto Larga for a full bodied smoke (best bang for the buck IMHO)
Punch Champion--very tasty figurado

Padron X000-can't beat value/taste ratio. I've tried the Wavells--did not float my boat but I've known guys that really like these.

Hope these helps.

Best,

Joe

Thanks guys! I made a list and I'll be heading out in a few minutes to go shopping. I'll let you guys know what I come back with....

Thanks again,
D

And I'm back! Apparently I'm blind!!!! They have had the Padron series all along. I picked up a 3000 as well as a ERDM Robusto Larga. As I'm more familiar with the brands now, I took a look around to see what else I recognized. They also carry Oliva, a lot of CAO, a lot of Fuente, Onyx, and a lot of others that I'm forgetting about now. Anyway, many of your suggestions are in stock, so there is plenty to keep me busy for a while.

Thanks for all your help!
