Last time I flirted with cigars I tried a La Gloria Cubana Serie R, which I *really* liked  , a Hoyo de Monterey Dark Sumatra (Espresso) which didn't really do much for me, but wasn't at all bad-just too spicy.
I also tried a Punch, can't remember what it was exactly or if I liked it or not, and a Maduro(IIRC) Hoyo, also in Robusto sized.
IIRC they were all Robusto sized.

Anyway, I was thinking about dropping some cash on a couple of Fuente samplers from Holts.com, and maybe an Ashton sampler or two also.

Anyone have any recommendations on what else I should try for a new guy?

Thanks :)

Ooops, guess I should mention, I'm trying to keep myself under the $10.00 range per stick if at all possible (Still doing the financial recovery thing, just better off now thatn I was two years ago.) That might make things a little more difficult when it comes to selectiong a brand to try though.

Thanks again! :)

Under the $10.00 per stick range? WOW! You have expensive tastes, not that there is anything wrong with that.

Let me start by saying that I don't know if you're new to cigars or just new to this board, and I have no idea about your cigar experience.

With that said, price does not always equate to quality or taste. What I mean is, simply because you may have paid a lot for a cigar, there is no guarantee that the cigar will be good, in either taste or quality. Or, a cigar does not have to be expensive to taste good, or be of a good quality.

For one thing, taste is subjective. You simply may not like it because it does not fit what you consider a cigar that tastes good. Someone else may love it because it fits into their taste preferences.

There are several manufacturers that make tasty, high quality cigars in the 3-6 dollar per cigar range. And to find these cigars, your best bet is to visit a local tobacconist, explain that you would like a sampler. Tell him what you have smoked before and what you liked and didn't like. And if they know their trade, they'll be able to set you up with a nice cigar sampler.

However, be advised that single stick prices are 15-20% higher than if you were to buy a full box.

Another option is to buy ready-made samplers at some of the better known on-line vendors such as Cigars International or Famous Smoke Shop. http://www.cigarsinternational.com and http://www.famous-smoke.com respectively. There are others where you can buy samplers. I'm sure others can offer suggestions.

May your hunt for your favorite cigars be long and satisfying. :)

And if you are new to cigars, please check out The Newbie Primer:

So...I just read your profile. And it appears that you are a relative cigar Newbie. So, the Newbie Primer should supply some information for you that you may not have known. And it should answer some questions that you might have about cigars.

Beyond that, I hope the Newbie Primer helps you in other ways as well.

By the way...Welcome to the CPBB!

Heh, not so much expensive tastes as it being my almost rabid desire to buy everything my roomie is recommending. Now that boy has some expensives tastes I'll tell ya. :whistling:
Besides, I'm probably only going to be smoking one or two a week-at least for now anyway, besides I still love my pipe and the zillions of tobacco's available for it, so that really works out to about $50.00 or so per month. Nice and affordable. :p

Thanks for the Primer and the welcome :D

Well I was going to highly recommend the newbie sampler but when I was grabbing the URL I noticed you just posted there

WRT other samplers it also might be worth checking out cigarbid.com. A lot of the Cigars International stock goes to cbid and can be had at a better price, but be warned there is also a LOT of gouging there. Basically if you are savy about checking the real prices (offered on other sites) of whatever you are bidding on, there are great deals to be had and it is a great way to discover your likes and dislikes.

Just my 2c

Might i suggest macanudos if you like very mild stuff. If you like the more potent stuff as it appears you do then try something from CAO. As a pipe man you should know of em huh? I love the CAO Gold (medium to mild), my favorite is the CAO Extreme (bold flavor but not super strong) or the CAO Italia (nice and smooth with power). Try those. If your looking for a good cheapie then Cuesta Rey makes respectable cigars and they are nearly identical from box to box - very well made. If looking to stock up on good cheapies then try Consuegra http://www.jrcigars.com they're seconds of Hoyo De Monterey and Punch, but rediculously cheap! Hope this helps!

These are dark naturals which I think are very good:
Carlos Torano Exodus 1959 (Gold ones NOT the Silver)
Oliva "O" Bold

Nice maduros are:
El Rey del Mundo Robustos Larga & Robustos Suprema
Excalibur No I
Excalibur Prensado

That's it Clark, you're officially kicked OUT of CigarPass.

Friends don't let friends smoke macanoodles. :D

I like the carlos torano as well. You can also try CI'S mild and mello sampler I think it is called.Someone else mentioned this already but expensive does not always mean good you have to develop your own tastes. There are quite a few expensive cigars I dont care for I wont mention them by name because I would get slapped by some lol. Let your own taste develop and smoke what you like as time goes by you will be able to know what kind of stick suits you. For me it is mild to med but lately it is heading more towards the full range as I smoke more.

I of course gotta come in and plug my personal favorite, the Carlos Torano Signature collection. These are around $4-6 a stick depending on where you buy from, but they have that wonderful taste. Mmmm-Mmmm good!

Oh yeah, welcome to the board!

... If your looking for a good cheapie then Cuesta Rey makes respectable cigars and they are nearly identical from box to box - very well made. ...

Along this theme of Cuesta-Rey...for $18.00, you get a Cuesta-Rey 4-cigar sampler (valued at a MSRP of $26.95), a Cuesta-Rey Centro Fino Golf Shirt, and a quarterly newsletter, along with a few other items. This is a great deal. I have been doing it for the last 3-4 years.

See this link for full details:

For a well made, mild yet tasty cigar, give it a shot.

First I'll assume you mean what else can I pick up while I'm at Holt's or buy from Holt's. I think you're first two choices are excellent for just about anyone.

If you're driving in, pick up at least two Aston ESG($16). If it's too much money you can sell them here to graterful ESG lovers. ;) If you're ordering online get two VSG Enchantments. (You can't get the ESGs online and the limit on both is two sticks)

Boxwise you might consider one you have already smoked and liked. Of course, if you buy something in demand you can always resell it here.

Nice maduros are:
El Rey del Mundo Robustos Larga & Robustos Suprema

What he said.

Also worth a try:

-Fuente Hemingways
-Padron 000's
-Padron Annis, since you're looking to spend some money ;)
-The regular LGC line, both natural and maduro
-Cuesta Rey Centenarios (I like the Sungrowns)

and so on...

Punch Rare Corojo
Avo Maddy
Anything Fuente - try them then buy what you like!
VSG's - if you can get them for under your price window!

Happy Hunting!

Thanks guys!
I'm gonna put them all on my list, get a couple of each and go from there I think.

Vortex - Any idea if Holt's will ship those ESG's, or are they strictly walk-in sales only?

Fuente chateau fuente (abt $4-$5 a stick).
Fuente hemingways.
Ashton heritage puro sol corona gorda
CAO brazilia samba

My 2c...

If you liked the La Gloria Serie R (which is my favorite smoke BTW), you might like the Sancho Panza Double Maduro La Mancha (91 rating) as an everyday cigar and at only $40 a box its a steal.

But if money is no object:
CAO L'Anniversaire Maduro Aristocrat
La Aurora Preferidos No. 1 Maduro
AVO Maduro Belicoso

All excellent smokes, just not everyday smokes
