My girlfriend and I make a spring vacation somewhere south of the border. This year, I'd like to visit the Dominican Republic. Along the way, I'd be interested in visiting a tobacco farm and possibly get some first hand experience seeing a torcedor at work.

The #1 thing, however, is the missus must be happy with the vacation spot. I'm thinking maybe an all inclusive resort style hotel on the beach. I'm planning on being gone a full week so it must be nice. I'm not looking for the most expensive spot on the island, however.

Does anyone have any suggestions or experiences with a nice resort and a visit to a cigar mfg?

Thanks for your help.

Turk - Some relatives of mine recently visited the Dominican Republic. They are avid travelers and have been all over the world. Needless to say, their trip to the DR was not a memorable one. The "resort" turned out to be far from a resort and the island as a whole was a disappointment. I seem to remember a story about a rat the size of a small dog! Granted this is all heresay and I'm sure there are plenty of brothers/sisters here at CP that have had wonderful vacation experiences there... but this is just one account of a not so pleasant trip.

Good luck with your decision. I have known several folks who visited Costa Rica and were quite pleased with the experience...

try Dr1. It's a good sight to post and ask question on the DR. However don't expect much from the DR.

Can you say Capcana?

Do a search as this has been dicussed before and Miami Cubano has given some good information.

The resort of choice is Punta Cana for most Americans, away from the reality of the grinding poverty on the island. As far as visiting a tobacco farm, the farms are usually located far from the cities and the towns you have to traverse to get to the tobacco fields is the not very desirable or safe. I just came back from visiting the General Cigar facilities and everything was organized by the company, that's the only way i would visit the tobacco fields, invitation from a company. YMMV!

We stayed HERE and had a wonderful time. There are five hotels that you have access to, so for us and our 4 day trip, there was no reason to leave the resort. While I would love to visit a factory some day, I'll save that for later. We used the vacation to relax, and that we did.

We are going back the 23 of April for 5 days. Shoot me a pm if you have any more questions.
