Growing too fast.
It started out cloudy this morning, however by afternoon the clouds began to disperse and the sun came beaming through. I’d say it’s probably the high eighties to low nineties out with the humidity quite high making the air somewhat thick with mugginess. I can feel beads of sweat running down my back. Luckily though, there’s a decent enough breeze that helps. As the wife and baby girl play in the pool, I grab my Serie V Maduro that I received a couple years ago from my good friend Gary (IronPeddler), who said it was one of the original releases.
Inspecting the cigar, the wrapper is dark brown, coarse, what looks to be tooth throughout, and slight noticeable oil. I clip the perfectly constructed tapered head and find the draw extremely tight, so clip off a bit more and air begins to flow well enough with a sweet cocoa taste coming through. With fire to the foot and an even glowing orange across the circumference, I take a couple puffs bringing plenty of smoke through.
My first draw I got a strong black pepper spice on the back of the tongue and throat, however not overpowering at all. The smoke itself was a medium strength with a thick, oily body over the palate and had a slight bitterness at the beginning, however underneath the flavor was dark and rich. If any a cigar I’ve smoked had a chocolate taste, this one was definitely it. Not just chocolate, but more of a deep, rich fudge brownie flavor and oh so delicious. I detected an earthy taste as well as what seemed to be a hint of cedar wood, yet the chocolate flavor definitely dominant.
Through the first third and into halfway, the burn was razor sharp with a very compact dark gray ash that had noticeable tooth throughout. Although the draw had a bit more resistance than I like, more than enough medium to full strength smoke was flowing well. Flavors were consistent with tastes as previously described, rich, thick, and meaty over the palate with a wonderful pepper spice that was just right, a delicious twang left in the finish and lip smacking good.
The final third was as fantastic as the first three-quarters with sharp burn, good draw, and absolutely rich, delicious flavors and a lasting finish left after slowly exhaling. What an incredible cigar this was, hitting my palate just right in every way. Thanks so much Gary for an excellent experience on a wonderful Sunday afternoon.
