On this date in 1800, President John Adams ordered the federal government to pack up and leave Philadelphia and set up shop in the nation's new capital in Washington, D.C. After Congress adjourned its last meeting in Philadelphia on May 15, Adams told his cabinet to make sure Congress and all federal offices were up and running smoothly in their new headquarters by June 15, 1800. Philadelphia officially ceased to serve as the nation's capital as of June 11, 1800. At the time, there were only about 125 federal employees. Official documents and archives were transferred from Philadelphia to the new capital by ship over inland waterways. President and Mrs. Adams did not move in to the (unfinished) president's mansion until November of that year. Settling in to the White House was a challenge for the new first lady. In December, Abigail Adams wrote to a friend later she had to line-dry their clothes in what eventually became the East Room.

Thanks for posting Doc. But here's something I'm gonna have to proclaim my ignorance on....what was the alternative, esp. in 1800, to line-drying clothes? I remember reading somewhere that some manner of hand-cranked dryer was invented around that time, if not before, but just how many people had such a contraption? Also, I don't think the build-a-better-mousetrap of the dryer came along until sometime in the late 1800's, almost 1900's.

I think the simple answer to your question is, constuction was still underway and it was too dusty and dirty outdoors to hang one's clothes.

I was thinkin that the emphasis must be placed on line-drying INDOORS rather than simply line-drying, but, couldn't quite get which angle was bein' emphasized. Thought it mighta been ol' Abby sayin'..."oh, good lord, I am simply beside myself that I had to LINE-DRY these clothes..."
