On Tuesday, December 7th at around 3pm, the nest for 11 years of the beloved red-tailed hawk known as Pale Male was removed from 927 Fifth Avenue. NYC Audubon is disheartened and angered by this thoughtless act and is working with U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service and the DEC to see that the nest is restored.

We have received numerous calls and emails from concerned citizens in New York and across the country, expressing their sadness and outrage, and asking what they can do to rectify this situation.

We have sent a letter to Mayor Bloomberg, Senators Clinton & Schumer, NY State Senators and Assemblymen and Governor Pataki.

Please make your voice heard and contact your elected officials as well as the building manager, Brown Harris Stevens, at info@bhsusa.com. Tell them how you feel and that you want the nest put back. Please cc info@nycaudubon.org on all your correspondences so that we may collaborate our efforts and work as a group to see that Pale Male's nest is returned.

Also see Pale Male for more information about Pale Male.Above Image used courtesy of Lincoln at palemale.com.

If they need a replacement, have 'em come by my office. We have about 20 different red tails swing through here on a daily basis. Even if they return the nest, the bird won't come back to it.

The continue to return to the ledge where the nest used to be. They continue to try to build a new nest but without the pigeon spikes the twigs just blow away :(

Well, then they need to return the pigeon spikes, not the nest. If the bird has food, he's not going away. They are pretty much bound to a territory until the food runs out, then they move on. Without reading about this, why did they remove the nest?/ Was the bird causing a problem?? I used to birdwatch a lot, though haven't really done it since the kids came along. Big birds of prey are fun to watch. Recently we had a fairly large eagle on our property. It was hunting down stray kittens. It hung around for a few days and then dissappeared. Probably went towards the river southwest of here. During the winter there a large population of various types of eagles that nest there. Really cool to see a bunch of bald eagles flying around with each other.

Signed.

Have some that live out back and they are outstanding!

They (building management) removed the nest due to the carcasses of pigeons and rats falling to the sidewalk below the nest. This nest is in prime Manhattan real estate.....5th Avenue overlooking Central Park. I guess the millionaries didn't like stepping over the carcasses when getting in and out of ther limos :p

Exactly. Paula Zahn (from CNN)'s husband is the condo board president, and he ordered it removed.

Only one resident of the building has spoken out, Mary Tyler Moore. She has actually joined the protestors who are out on the street in front of the building.

Supposedly the 'real reason' the people wanted it gone is because lots of people gather in central park accross the street with binoculars and telescopes to watch the hawks and they tenants feel like their privacy is being invaded.

Red tail hawks are awesome. A girl I dated, her dad was into falconry. I'd go out w/ him and his red tail. Quite the awesome thing to see a hawk take a rabbit down. He then got a Harris Hawk and that thing was beautiful. Here is a pic:

Done!

I have one that hangs around my house and two that live on the property where I work. I have come home to find the hawk sitting in my dogwood tree in the front yard! Beautiful bird!! I especially enjoy his call when the crows are messing with him in my back yard!

The two we have at work are so cool! One is older (at least 10 years) as he's been here since I started working here 10 years ago. He can nab a squirrel, strip him to the bone in less than 10 minutes! We also have a Great Horned Owl living here too!!!

Nice post and cause, Mike!!

There's Red Tails all around our property. They are definitely awesome. Every once in a while we'll even get to see one swoop. Awesome display of nature to see a bird of prey swooping in on a meal.

I've also got some sort of big assed owl family that has taken up residence on my roof. At night it sounds like midgets fokkin'

Here is the Full Story

"NEW YORK (AP) -- Two celebrated red-tailed hawks whose eviction from their nest high atop a chic Manhattan building sparked protests from bird watchers will be allowed to rebuild their home in the same spot."

Don't mess with Mother Nature. I bet somebody gets some entrails on their head.

Great... I just received my email also:

What's New December 2004

WITH YOUR HELP, AUDUBON WINS VICTORY FOR FAMED HAWK
Great news! Audubon Society negotiators and the Co-op Board of a posh Manhattan building reached an agreement that will allow Pale Male and his mate Lola to rebuild their nest! Within days, a network of steel spikes that previously held Pale Male’s nest in place, and will hold his new nest in place, should return to the hawks' 12th-floor home, just in time for mating season.

Many thanks for your inspiring commitment to help Pale Male by signing our petition. Your signature, and that of thousands upon thousands of other concerned citizens will help ensure Pale Male is going home for the holidays! As this is not the only or last fight we’ll see on issues that impact bird like Pale Male across the nation, we hope we can count on you to participate in future efforts to protect America’s special birds, as your involvement is truly effective! Just as our fight to save Pale Male’s nest proves, your help makes a world of difference! For more information, visit our website at: http://www.capitolconnect.com/audubon/

All our best wishes to you and your loved ones this holiday season.
