I travel around all the time for work and am rarely in my home state. So I needed my emissions inspection done in Maryland, and they suspend your registration if you don't get it done. I'd already had one extension and hadn't been in MD since then, and they wouldn't give me another.
So they sent me a form to fill out vehicle information, where I was temporarily living, why I was there, etc. On the bottom, it said "I certify that the vehicle described in Section 1 is located in this state and was observed in: (City, County, State, Date, Officer's Signature, Badge/ID #, Agency, Phone #).
So I go to the City Police where I'm living, they say it's against their policy to sign civil forms.
Next head to County Sheriff; he won't sign it either and refers me to the State Police.
State Police won't sign it either, and tell me to go to the DMV (MVA in MD said I couldn't do that).
Head to neighboring City Police, they won't sign it because they don't want to have to worry about traveling out of their jurisdiction if they ever need to verify where it's located again.
Head back to City Police where I'm living again and beg and plead to sign it, no dice.
I ended up finding a friend of a friend in a neighboring county who used to be pretty high up in the department, and has a friend sign it. All the papers and vehicle I had here are legit and in order.
Do your departments have policies like any of these? Would you have been able or willing to sign such a form? This was a huge pain and almost resulted in my registration being suspended. Sorry for the long post, kind of a half rant / half question after a looooong day...
