I mentioned my Tai Chi practice in another post and it generated a bit of comment, so I thought I'd share this---tonight was our Chinese New Year's banquet, a major fundraiser for us with ticket sales and a silent auction. I was "voluntold" to be the MC for the evening---with preachers on both sides of the family, a background in speech competitions and theater, and twenty years in the classroom I have a bit of a "Voice™"---and it was a great, great evening. Beautiful food and lots of fun.

Got a little carried away in the silent auction, though. But a helluva good haul! Behold! An original Aboriginal painting from Australia, art photography from another Society member (a good friend, who's also a bit of a hottie), a jade pendant, and . . . the most expensive six pack of homebrew I'll ever drink. There was a bit of a bidding war, and at some point I was just "Eff it! I am TAKING THIS BEER HOME WITH ME!!!"

I've considered taking up Tai Chi, but all the instructors in my area are women and none are Chinese. I don't think I'd be comfortable.

Tai chi kicked my ass, bad, but was so relaxing.

Horse stance, deep and proper, is tough to hold for minutes at a time.

Classes here are about 80% women, and 8 out of 9 instructors are women. Our master instructor, Virginia, is Filipino and the western states master instructor certification board chairperson, among other positions she holds in the Taoist Tai Chi Society. Level of training is, as you might suspect, pretty intense here!

Most people in the group are retired or at least semi-retired, and in their sixties or seventies. We have one eighty year old woman who will flat put you in the ground trying to keep up with her! There are a few young people though, including two of the cutest little coeds you ever saw---one was in formation next to me last week, wearing skimpy little running shorts, and I have to say, Needle Pierces Sea Bottom---which we were learning, and practiced over and over and :D over---really made my day!

Fun fact: Bruce Lee started in Tai Chi, and trained under the famous Hong Kong master, Ip Man.

Year of the Monkey (haven't you always wanted a monkey?)... Hope it brings health and prosperity.

Last time I partook in an auction like that, I ended up spending entirely too much on stuff I entirely didn't need, but I got a cool globe out of it. Sounds like you did well.

I think considering taking up Tai Chi might be good for our health. I'm condiderin right now and feel better already! ;) Seriously, though, I also would feel "uncomfortable" having a bunch of elderly women show me up.
