Got a single of this cigar and was planning on waiting a while before smoking it...but found quite a bit of white spots developing. I assumed it was early stages of mold.

So I decided to light this bad boy up.

Specs...

5-1/22" x 52
Filler = Cuba
Binder = Cuba
Wrapper = Cuba (not too dark, a little oily, thin veins)

Shape...

The cigar is either a belicoso or torpedo shape

Refreshments...

Diet Pepsi
Multi grain Wheat Fig newtons

Lighting...

Cut the cigar with cigar scissors...the construction of the cigar is superb.
I lit the cigar with my newly purchased Xtend Dupont lighter.
The cigar burned a little unevenly...mostly because it's a 'cold' and windy night.

Flavor...

Definitely a cuban! There's something about this cigar that says rich, but in a light way. It's more on the mellow side...with a nice aftertaste. The first half of the cigar has hints of wheat and light brown sugar. It has a slight cedar and syrupy core. It never got harsh even through the 2nd half. I'm amazed with the aftertaste of the cigar...slight tang, not too much. Overall flavor...toast, nutty.

Strength...

As most of you know, I can't take cigars with high nicotine content. This cigar didn't put me under! It's definitely on the mild to medium side.

Nose...?

Dang! I just accidentally exhaled through my nose! It was a shock...but it wasn't unpleasant. The aftertaste now has a carmelized toast flavor to it. Very nice.

Recommendation...

This is definitely a cigar that I wouldn't mind smoking more of. For those that enjoy stronger smokes, this might not be the cigar for you. One of my top 10 cubans.

Great review!

San Cristobal is one of my favorite lines, hands down. And you are right, it is nice to enjoy lots of flavor on the lighter side of the spectrum. If you enjoyed this you should try the la Fuerza. It is one of my favorite smokes and is a bit more refined and balanced that the la Punta.

Nice review! I'm a fan of the La Punta as well. I need to get a box for the coolerdor very soon!

Good review on the cigar! What do you mean it was cold and windy in California? :D

Very good review - thanks!

I have a box of 01, after reading I have to break one out
and yes, probably in a cold and no sun day in San Diego.

What the hell, almost $4 at the pump, insane taxes to live
in cold S.California.

Sun, sun, sun, here it comes!!!

There's the guy who got me the cigar!

Thanks Wurm for trading this cigar...otherwise I wouldn't have been able to try it!

Chew, that was a really nice review! Keep 'em coming!

I think I will be in the minority, but I don't care for this cigar at all. Just doesn't fit my palate or "do it" for me. But to each their own!

damn, I should always get 2 of every stick...that way I can find out stuff like this.

I need to get more of these cigars so I can see how they change with age.

Don't get me wrong...I felt the nicotine when I got to the last inch.

A very good smoke indeed.

Well, you're correct in that they're not "strong" but I do agree with you that they are slightly below what's considered to be the middle of the range with respect to strength, especially when they are young.

MRN says they are "3/5 when new, expected to become 4/5 within 3 to 5 years."

I've smoked young ones and others with six years of age and while there's not a huge difference in strength, the aged ones are slightly stronger. I don't know if I'd quite say the aged ones are a "4/5" but they're at least a 3.

I consider the following to be "mild":

Quai d'Orsay
Fonseca
Guantanamera

A little stronger would be:
Hoyo de Monterrey
Rafael Gonzales

San Cristobals are definitely sronger than those but again, they are generally considered to be a "medium" strength or at the very least "mild to medium."

I think they are a very good cigar. My taste buds are not as refined as most but to me, what stands out is a "peppery" flavor of the wrapper which makes this one of my top five Havanas.

Oh chewbacco, I want to thank you for this review. It prompted me to pull a La Fuerza out of the coolerdor while I sit here and watch the Astros!!

It's a November '03 and it's smoking GREAT!

thanks for all the info...I'm new to cubans (and still a newbie with cigars)...it's good to hear other's opinions about cigars...especially cubans.

Heard a lot about those La Fuerza's...

Let us know how it was, especially with 3 years of age...maybe I need to get my hands on one of those.
