This WAS TAKEN FROM ANOTHER BOARD..
I know you guys are pretty well read and intelligen,t maybe one of you knows..
One of my teachers read this story to the class... it was probably back in 1992. The story is about an astronaut who's mining an asteroid or something. He's scehduled to go to the launching pad to get on a rocket off the asteroid, and some of the other miners told him to leave before dark. There's weird rock formations on this asteroid and it looks like something has been sharpening its claws on them. But they never see any lifeforms when it's light out. 1 of the miners claims he heard them when he was walking at night, and they stayed just out of the light from his lamp.
So anyway, this astronaut leaves late for some reason, and he starts driving the space buggy or whatever, but the battery goes dead. So he starts walking and it starts getting dark out. He thinks about the stories the other miners told him and decides that no such creature could live on this asteroid becuz there's no food source. But as he walks, he swears that he hears a scraping noise just beyond the light of his lamp. And then remembers some other creature on another planet that could live off the energy from gamma rays and didn't need a food source.
After he walks for a while, the lamp starts to die and the noises get louder and louder. Finally the lamp dies and he throws it at the creatures -- even though he can't see them, he now believes that they're there. He runs in a panic until he sees the lights of the launching pad in the distance. The lights are bright enough to keep the creatures at bay, so he thinks he's safe... until the path heads down a hill that is in the shadow of the lights -- and then he hears the scraping of claws on the trail in front of him.
It's a pretty cool story, but I can't remember the name. I think the author might be Ray Bradbury. Does anybody know it or at least know where I could find out? I tried doing a search online, but I don't have much to go on...
