One of my favorite artists Joe Jackson (Steppin Out- Is she Really Going Out With him?- whats the use of Getting sober etc.)

Wrote a great article published in Cigar Magzine Winter 2007.

I read it today at a smoke shop while enjoying a favorite.

it is a long read but very good. I highly recommend you ALL read this.

Post your thoughts here.

Fantastic article. Much along my line of thinking.

I've been particularly stubborn about my occassional
cigar since seeing a (female)casino worker from AC
on TV screaming "They're trying to kill me!", during
testimony to ban smoking from NJ casinos. Of course,
the smoking ban for AC casinos is now in effect. :(
The woman was completely hysterical about second
hand smoke. She probably gets more carcinogens
from the freeway on the way to work, but doesn't
realize it.

When I was a boy fully 1/2 of adults seemed to smoke,
many several packs per day, but most died from causes
other than lung cancer.

I'm not treating smoking lightly, just trying to give it
better perspective, as this article does.

I'll pass the link on to other, non-cigar, boards. Thanks.

Chemyst

I actually read the article when the magazine was current. Very well written.
Just sad how this whole thing has evolved.

Thanks for the link. That was a good read.

Up until a year or so ago I was a VERY casual cigar smoker for the past 25 years or so. Normally only smoking a handful a year. Cigar smoke doesn't bother me much. Frankly, cigarette smoke bothers me quite a bit--especially in restaurants.

I'm an Illinois resident and earlier this year they outlawed all indoor smoking in public places. I think it is a stupid thing to do. I may not like cigarette smoke but people have a right to smoke if they want to--even indoors. Just as I have the right to not smoke. My rights shouldn't trump theirs as theirs should not trump mine.

It's pretty sad when the state rips away someone's rights like that. I feel sorry for the cigarette smokers that now can only smoke outdoors. Since I've grown more interested in cigar smoking, I guess the silly restrictions now apply to me as well. I usually smoke out on my patio, hopefully they won't try to criminalize that anytime soon....

This was an interesting and well written piece. I wish though that he would have included citations. The paper would be far more credible if all of the information was backed up for the skeptics.

WOW! I remember Joe Jackson, he was big when I was in college in the early 80's. I never saw him in concert but enjoyed his music.

When I first saw the words "Nanny State" I woulda bet a lot of cigars the article had to do with Connecticut since we're the ultimate "Nanny State." It's a very common phrase here used to describe the Nutmeg State (or Constitution State) because these days, we're FAR WORSE than even California with stuff like this. The new Speaker of the House starting in 2009 is the most "left" Speaker this state has ever had so it's only going to get worse...... :(

Thank for the article btb, I'll have to find to time to read it in its entirety. I briefly scanned it and ole Joe is right on the money!

It's the same way that everything evolves, feed enough crap in the right places and we start believing it.

What puzzles me about this scenario though... who is gaining by outlawing smoking. Someone is benefiting right? ??? :D

Read that particular article a while back. On the same topic, have a look at this from Penn and Teller's Bullshit show. It has a lot of interesting facts:
http://www.surfthechannel.com/info/televis...48382/S1E5.html

Penn publicly corrected a part of this Bullsh!t episode, referencing a study in England that, I infer, supports the findings of the study rejected by US Federal Courts. Does anyone know more about this study and the alleged findings?

Meh, you would still do more harm walking next to a busy road for half an hour than a night spent next to a smoker.

Alleged is a good word for that newer study. I think Penn was just covering his ass more than anything, realising there will always be a new lobbyist-biased 'study' that doesn't use any conclusive (or even convincing) scientific facts in its development.

From Wiki:
Penn Jillette, with Teller sitting at his side, said regarding this episode they were "very likely" wrong and the next season would add a notation. Penn went on to describe "a new study that came out of England, just recently, that seems to have more stuff about it" and "right now, as I sit here, there probably is danger in secondhand smoke." He went on to say that this was a small portion of the program, and their main point was their opposition to "outlawing" smoking in privately-owned businesses, which they still "stand behind 100%."

As he should be! The balance is out the window, and smokers are now considered lepers because of the government endorsed 'denormalisation' of a certain citizen's habits.

In my opinion, this effectively allows state-supported discrimination against smokers (despite the enjoyment of a legal product). People are given license to look down at, lecture and be generally dismissive of a certain type of person because of a (LEGAL) habit they quietly enjoy. Smokers are being slowly pushed into the drug-addict category in some idiots minds because of this constant, encouraged 'class' abuse.

No sober person smoking a cigarrette has been intoxicated by tobacco enough to cause an accident behind the wheel. I speak too rashly though, the war on Alcohol is next in line. As Jeremy Clarkson said regarding the Government: 'They wont stop until everything is illegal.' :D You get his point though.
