I received an email yesterday from Hi-Time Wine Cellars for an internet only "special offering" for a 1985 Fonseca Vintage Port. I picked up a bottle for the Holidays and figured it was time to start organizing the cellar for some serious wine drinking.

I've also stocked the bar with more Pappy Van Winkle 20 year old Bourbon, just for the Holidays.

Anybody else getting any special bottles for the Holidays?

I got this for the holidays. Not exactly Port though :p

Hey NCCL, how much was that 20yr old? I have had the Fonseca before and I loved it, but a bottle from 85' would be divine.

Here's one for about $350 less, including shipping. Does that tempt you?

Actually, the seller was willing to do down to $530 on the Yquem .... that's what tempted me ;) . And thanks for the pointer the Premier Cru, I forgot that I had some other sauternes on order with them

tkoepp, I was able to get the Fonseca for $99, not the best price out there but it should be a nice wine for the holidays or maybe even a good SS gift :whistling:

$530 is the going price for a half bottle so I'd really check on that since Wally's isn't known for giving great prices. If it is $530 for a full 750 that is the best price in the world for that bottle.

Yes, it was $530 for the 750. DAMN! that's what I thought, I should have bought it  .

I almost picked up a bottle of 1975 Chateau d'Yquem this past weekend .... almost .... fortunately there were others around to snap me back into reality

I'm not as much into sweet dessert wines. But this is the the Sauternes of all Sauternes. At $400 a bottle, it scored 100pts a few years ago through Wine Spectator ("WS")

I prefer Cabs, Bordeaux wines and other reds.

I just split a few cases of 2004 Caymus (yellow label) with several colleagues. We recently ordered a few cases of Concha y Tora Don Melchor 2003. Can you tell that we are suckers for WS's Top 100 list?

We've also ordered the Two Hands Shiraz (#10 overall this year), Chateau Leoville Barton (#3) and Kosta Browne Pinot Noir (#7) :)

I'm trying my best to age this stuff...I tell you, it's tough!!!!

I have the fortune of buying wine at cost...my father-in-law is a restauranteur. Don't tell anyone! :)

That bottle of d'Yquem is still haunting me .... I may have to take a drive back up and get it. Unless, somebody has some to trade :whistling:

LOL.... WS really is your friend, but that is a great selection of wines you have there. Gotta love the Kosta Browne, my order of 4-Barrel should be here any day now, the rest of my KB is sitting in the cellar ;)

Have you ever tried the Loring wines? we are so happy for Brian that he made the list this year! and of course Adam Lee, Siduri, is right there as well with his Garys' Vineyard. I may be seeing Brian and Adam tomorrow at tasting we're attending. Good thing I got on their mailing lists early in the game.

No, I haven't tried tried them. Being in MD, and at the mercy of its distributors (as we live in the stone ages), I don't have the luxury of getting wines that haven't been picked up by the various distributors.

Smaller batch wines are very difficult for me to pick up. Technically, wines aren't supposed to be shipped to MD directly to end consumers.

We might have to work out a few trades. :)

Sounds good to me

I'm able to get quite a few of the boutique wines and my cellar is busting at the seams. Check out my profile for some of my favorites.

I haven't finished my basement yet and I'm lucky to have an isolated area that maintains approx. 63-65 degrees. Humidity isn't completely desirable (40-50%), but temporarily it's doing the trick.

I affectionately refer to my cellar as "the wine racks in the basement"

I have a plan for my bottles when I finish the basement. I'm keeping some of my better stuff in a colleagues cellar...Caymus SS, Opus, Insignia, etc.
