OK, I stopped by the liquorist/tobacconist, and it's a wonder I made it out alive! I bought one bottle of Rangpur, one AF Opus X Fuente Fuente (for $9.99), one AF Don Carlos #3 (for $5.xx), and the last AF Anejo in the shop, a # 55 (for $8.xx)! There were also several sizes of Ashton VSG's that were tempting me mightily.
The gin was very nice. I find Tanq to be a very strong (aromatically and flavor-, uh, flavorally?) gin, and not especially to my taste. The Rangpur is much more restrained, and the hint of lime to it is very nice. Like all gins, I like the aroma more than I do the taste, but this one is pretty nifty on both counts. The aroma and flavor both are weaker versions of the classic Tanq with a bit of lime (imagine Tanq on the rocks with a lime twist after about 15 minutes of sitting). It's likely too weakly flavored to make G&T's with (Gordon's is my favorite for that; nice and strong), as I think this gin would get lost in the tonic. It would definitely lose its distinctiveness if mixed with anything, so IMHO this gin is really only useful for sipping on the rocks. I did not do a side-by-side comparison to see if any other differences crop up, but there could very well be some. It is unlikely my palate could pick them out anyway.
The Rangpur was on a get-to-know-you sale of $19.00 per bottle, so I may have to go back and buy a few more bottles. While I'm there I may pick up a few more sticks, as well...
