Jesus of Cool, I'm bad, I'm nationwide
The Great San Fransisco earthquake struck at 5:12 AM, extending for almost 300 miles along the San Andreas fault. The earthquake and resulting fire is remembered as one of the worst natural disasters in the history of the United States. The toll from the earthquake and resulting fire represents the greatest loss of life from a natural disaster in California's history. It also began the rise of America's largest financial institution; The Bank of America. The American Bank of Italy, forerunner of The Bank of America , was founded in San Francisco by Amadeo Giannini in 1904. When the 1906 San Francisco earthquake struck, Giannini was able to get all of the deposits out of the bank building and away from the fires, and thus, unlike many other banks, had money to loan to those struck by the disaster.
