In advance I'd like to once again thank everyone that was involved in helping this family. Everyone from the organizers of the auction, the generous bidders, the many people who sent gift cards, those that sent cash, and those that sent useful stuff directly to this family. Each and everyone of you need to know that you made a difference in this families life.

This trip almost didn't happen because of a lack of anywhere to stay in the area. This area is in shambles and all hotels from Texas to Mobile are booked solid with relief workers. I was fortunate to have another brother from CF allow my wife and I to stay with them Saturday night. Tim (2d4d on CF) had sustained a bit of damage himself and the first 4 pictures in the link below is just of the clean up piled in front of his home. I think the pictures will give you some idea of what they have been dealing with. I thought it strange that Tim would tell me how fortunate they were even though his home sustained a hole in the roof from a fallen tree. What I saw the next day explained it all.

Sunday morning we went to the aunt's house that Alex and Billie are currently staying with in Slidell. I'm not exactly sure how many people are staying there but I assure you its more than a dozen people. I met more aunts, uncles, cousins, and next door neighbors than I can remember. There were a lot of people in and out of the house. It was controlled chaos with everything revolving around the fact that they were all "family". I gave Alex and Billie the gift cards that have come in over the last few weeks. Billie sat down organizing all the names and addresses. Next I gave Alex the shotgun that was donated to him. I think it was the first time I saw Alex somewhat drift back to his life before the storm. Alex has been a hunter all his life and I'm certain for a moment there while he handled the gun he had a thought or two of happier times.

We were going to go down to their former house in St Bernard but before we went I told them I had one more thing for them. I gave them the story about this cigar BB and how the auction came about and just rambled on about how so many generous people came together wanting to help their family. I gave them the check and the shock took over. First it was wide eyes, than shaking there heads, then the tears.... there wasn't a dry eye in the house. It was beautiful.

After eveyone gathered their composure we set off to go down to their former home. I'm not going to go into all of the details.... the pictures will speak for themselves. Keep in mind that all of these pictures are taken almost 6 weeks after the storm. There are a few pictures of some of Rita's damage that we passed on the way over. I can tell you that seeing this devestaion in person changes you. The pictures, while bad, can not give you the view of standing there in person. Totally unbelievable.

Wow, this is the most "inside" pictures I've seen.

Can't believe it's still like that after this long.

I know CP helped this one family, but how's every family in the affected areas handling this? Where to sleep, what to eat, what to do next?

How does a whole state start over again?

Amazing pictures...great job, great people.

If I'm not mistaken, it seems Moki ponied up the server space to host those pics. Thanks.

A bigger thanks to Kenny for doing all this and going far above and beyond.

I've seen small scale destruction since my house burned down with only me and my mother home on Sat 11 May 91 when I was 15. What wasn't gutted by fire was demolished by water damage from the fireman doing an unbelievable job. Fire erupted approx. 0852, 911 call was logged at 0853. Fire Dept arrived at approx 0858 and the fire was extinguished approx. 0915. The front half was gutted to the timbers, but the fire only burned 50-60% of the house but the whole thing was wrecked from smoke and water damage.

Seeing these pictures makes me shiver. I can still smell the smoke in my mind, feel the thigh high water as I truged through the end of my childhood. That was horrible.... this is unbelievable. After this interview in SA, I'm off to Leesville to help my sisters who turned thier church into a shelter. I only hope I can help some people a fraction of what you have done for this family.

Wow!

Thanks again to all who participated! THAT is some powerfull stuff....

Looks great! I will get a page together on CP with all the info. Thanks to all who made this happen!

Makes ya think doesn't it. What's really sad is my uncle told me (he's in the reserves) that Georgia doesn't have the funding to send more reserves in for a good couple of months.

Rod, I'm still working on Alex to give me the story in his words. He told me that he has written down some but hasn't finished yet.

I'll add one bit that I really didn't put one and one together about until this weekend while we were in their neighborhood. The St. Rita's Nursing Home that made the news where some 30+ elderly people died? Alex was one of the ones that was helping rescue some of them. This nursine home is right down the street from where they lived. Alex used his boat to help transport these people out of the nursing home and into a school that was three stories high. He told me that even as they were rescueing them that they knew a lot of them would not make it. The whole day was spent hearing these stories.... I could not imagine living it.

Edited to add this link that talks about the nursing home. Towards the end of the article it speaks about some of the local residents trying to move the residents out. Alex was one of those people helping. St Rita's Nursing Home

WOW! I forwarded the link to a friend and all she said was WOW also. Thanks for putting the pics up. It sure feels good to know that all the work and money went directly to those in need.

Kenny, glad you were able to make it over and present the check in person. I'm sure that meant as much to them as the money itself. It's good to see smiles on their faces and I hope that eventually they will get back to "normal", whatever that is, and have a very healthy and happy life. Life is about the people you know and the friends you meet and I think Billy and Alex's life has been blessed with your family's help and love, making two family's lives better in the process.

Kenny, your pictures really brought home the devastation and the emotional suffering that these people must be living through. And to think that Alex with his loss was trying to help rescue those trapped in that nursing home. The human spirit triumphs again above all the tragedy. God bless you and your wife for what you have done. Let us hope and pray that Alex and Billy will recover their lives and that their family will again prosper.
...Lou
