USPS Insurance

I just wanted to throw this out to the community to see once and for all what our opinion and experiences have been with insuring packages/passes with USPS Insurance.

I seem to recall reading in the past that filing claims for damaged or missing parcels even with insurance is a huge pain in the rear, and essentially futile. Especially when some of the items we're sending are supposed to be on the down low.

So before I tell everyone involved in the Not Your Everyday Cigar Pass that we should be shipping with insurance, is it worth it?

Also another thought, does a package with insurance need to be signed for? I'm pretty sure it does, which then tends to prolong delivery times since most of us are never home with the mailman comes.

Or when it comes down to it, we're talking about a high value of cigars, and an extra $6 when shipping should be worth it. My problem is that I just recently sent off a pass (from another board) and the shipping (with insurance as required by the host, 8lb package because he included some coffee and other things as potential takes) was $23.00! Now I start asking myself was it worth $23 of shipping just to trade for a couple cigars? Yikes!
 
If I remember right Insurance means you have to sign it. As for claims...its the Federal Government. They move slower than a snail when they OWE you but as soon as you owe them, they send the Blood Hounds after you immediately. So is Insurance worth it? Depends on what it is. Is it a huge pain to get back if they damage the goods? Hell yes it is. But its the Government. :laugh: I just insured one package in case something gets damaged as I have the receipt and it isnt isom in nature so no sweat. They break it, they will buy it. :D

I may have broken the 8lb package up into two and mailed them on the same day. Insured the sticks and not the coffee...just a thought!
 
if memory serves me correctly, CC had an expereience with the usps insurance. i may be wrong, but i do remember him posting something or another.
 
Personally I have never had a problem not insuring. However, guys that have been here a lot longer than me and those that have shipped many packages have more experience to answer this question.

I think the general consensus is not to insure.

Particpants in this pass are all responsible - JMHO. The problem is that we can all contribute financially but may not be able to replace the exact sticks - we can come close though!
 
I was under the impression that USPS didn't cover tobocco or alcohol. However, there is a category on their claims form for liquor/wine. I didn't see tobacco at all. I also recall Bill saying something about insurance.

CPI has my vote. My next pass will be covered by it. If for no other reason than to help the insurance fund grow.

Maybe Emo could give us a little update on how the insurance is holding up? :thumbs:

This is the only insurance you should ever need for a pass. If you're hosting or thinking of hosting one, you should contribute to the fund and get yourself covered.

For boxes other than passes, I personally never insure them. I've sent roughly 100 boxes (usually Priority click-n-ship) out over the past couple of years and never had a problem with any of them. The USPS has done fine by me. YMMV.

For once I agree with SteveHawk :whistling: . USPS Priority mail is pretty reliable when you look at the actual volume of mail that is delivered on a daily basis. But I have heard of the insurance hassles like the rest of you guys. Hence CPI. Andy, PM will be coming atcha in the near future.
