I recently had the opportunity to smoke a new cigar brand, Viaje. Viaje is a small company that is up and coming.

The cigar I chose was the Platino, in the Lancero (7.5 x 38). The cigar is a Nicaraguan puro, with a Nicaraguan Corojo 99 wrapper.

The wrapper had as light oily sheen to it, which is what I love about the Corojo wrapper. There was a very slight spice aroma to it, but nothing overpowering. I used a standard guillotine cutter and butane lighter for the cigar.

At first puff, the cigar had tremendous potential. There was an earthly flavor, which I’m not a big fan of. There was also a hint of coffee, or perhaps espresso, and a very very slight chocolate flavor. As the smoke continued, the ash held great, and had a nice light gray color. As I got to the 2nd half, the earthy tones overtook the cigar, and it became a bit much. As I got into the last 3rd, a picked up a bit of leather, but still had that overpowering earthy flavor, which began to taste more like dirt.

Over all, the construction of this cigar was excellent, and it produced a large amount of smoke at rest. It also had a great draw, which can be a problem with the thin Lanceros. Lanceros are often left to the most talented rollers, since there is far less room for air. It’s easier to mask a low quality roll in a 60 ring gauge than in a 38, since the 60 has more channels for the air to flow through.

The overall taste of the cigar was not to my liking, which is odd, since I’m a huge corojo fan. There was just too much of an earthy tone for me.
I was able to enjoy this cigar at Satin Jacks in Lafayette, NJ with Z Man. The atmosphere certainly enhanced the cigar, as did the company.

One of the things we talked about was how there is a difference between a bad cigar and a cigar you don’t like. This was certainly a good cigar, but not pleasing to my taste palate.

The price was a bit steep, in my opinion at $9.95. I would probably try a few more of these before totally writing them off, but not at that price.

If you like a good earth tone in your cigar, I highly recommend this one. For my tastes, I give the quality and construction 92/100 and flavor and taste 81/100.

Nice review! Like yourself, I am also not a big fan of very earthy tasting cigars. I still want to sample the Viaje lineup though.
