View Count.....Doesn't go up?

I have noticed that when I read someone's post and there are zero views and zero comments, the view count doesn't go up.  What triggers the count to advance?  Does someone have to comment first?
 
I think it's updated periodically (rather than real time) to save on resources.
 
View counts run as a SQL job in the background and execute every 15 minutes.  With hundreds of people/visitors constantly viewing threads (many from google searches), is very resource intense on the server to provide live view counts.
