What's your technique for keeping humidity up in the winter?

I use the Boveda pouches, works real well for me, but lately I have seen the humidity slip a bit. Might be time to change them - or the fact that my humi isnt all that good. (Ebay special) its at 65% right now, until this week it was right at 71% and stayed there for a month

I use a technique a couple FOGs turned me onto. Use the beads to set the upper limit and supply water with th copolymer gel. When the beads get saturated(RH starts going up) dry the beads and re-saturate the copolymer. Advantage is two-fold. First, when it fails, it fails upward RH and second, more time until you need to fool with it.

That being said, if you have a good seal it shouldn't be an issue. My tupperdor and my humi don't, so it works for me. One day I'll spring for a good humi and seal my tupperdor, I guess. :whistling: :laugh:

It could be a bad seal but this seems to be a common problem with people in dry climates. I would isolate my cigars in one particular area/room and use a room humidifier so the room is always at least 50%, this should help the problem.

Lately, I've found I like my cigars better when stored at lower humidity, I would say high 50s to low 60s, for RH, is probably better. I'm finding cigars stored above 66% to be more often sour tasting, to have more of a negative aftertaste and also to have more frequent burn issues.

You can also try adding more beads, you might not have enough.

I'm currently smoking a La Unica #400 that has been stored at 62-63% and it's probably the best La Unica I've ever had.

I have had the same problem the last few weeks. The humidor is 10 months old or so and has been at 65% since I seasoned it (I have the 65% beads). The last few weeks it's been at 61-62%. I'm not too worried now but don't want it to drop down into the 50's. I was able to get it back up to 65% again by putting a shot glass of distilled water in for a few days but it is back down to 61% now. Looks like I will have to just deal with it until the weather warms up.

I put a humidifier in the room and it helped immensely....as did stocking it almost full.

I was having a similar problem with low humidity (see 3-4 posts above). Yesterday I opened up the humi to see if any damage had been done and there were two sticks that were cracking and dry. The rest were all fine. I removed the bad smokes and checked the humidor this morning only to find the humidity up 7% (now at 68%). I only had those two dried out cigars for a short while so is it possible that they were dry when I got them and sucked up that much moisture? I wouldn't think 2 smokes could affect the humidity that much in a 400 count humidor.

Use few cups with distilled water, it really works

I move my humidor to the basement, which is unfinished and therefore doesn't get the drying effects of the heat upstairs. It actually serves two purposes, as it keeps the temp down, too. I've had no problems and haven't had to re-moisten beads or humidification units any more than normal.
