I think I’m going to invest in a wine-cooler to serve as my primary humidor and have read lots of threads that discuss Vinotemp coolers specifically. There are numerous manufacturers of wine-coolers and I am wondering what characteristics have led to this brands popularity? Thanks!

Several thermoelectric model options (thermoelectric allows for less humidity fluctuation than condensor refrigeration models). Vinotemp models are generally well regarded for their quality.

Haier is also a popular line of wine coolers for cigar storage. Their temperature control settings go up to 65 degrees Fahrenheit. High temp for wine; great for cigar storage - without the necessity for aftermarket temperature controllers. However, many Haeir models are of the condensor type variety.

All things considered, I'd suggest opting for either brand that can be purchased on the cheap. Shop around Craigslist or for discounted models due to slight imperfections. Don't be in a rush to buy and you will eventually find a great bargain. Maybe even on one of the many cigar boards.

The main difference seems to be volume. The typical wine refrigerator that many here have bought and repurposed for cigar storage will hold 40-50 boxes. Vinotemp makes units that will hold hundreds and hundreds of boxes. You are also looking at a commensurate price difference.
