I was recently at Jack's Tobacco burning a LGC Wavell. The long awaited tax bill was finally passed by the governor. I believe WI was previously at a 25% tobacco tax, with no ceiling.

The rumors I've heard have the tax bill changing to a 50% tobacco tax, with certain ceilings or upper limits on tax. Cigars (snuff, chew) are to be taxed at 50% a piece/unit with a ceiling of $.50 each. This would be a DECREASE in tax on items over $1 (most cigars, chew, etc) For example, a $10 PAM is currently taxed at 25% or $2.50/stick. Now it would be at 50% with a $.50 max, or a savings of $2.00/cigar. I was hoping someone could verify this.

I believe this will put cigarette smokers at the largest increase. The cigarette taxes account for the majority of the tax dollars in WI I believe. They will have a roughly $1/pack increase.

Anyone have any further info, or a different understanding of this new bill? I have yet to find a definite article or reference on it. The tobacco store was very happy and received calls from Ashton and LGC corporate congratulating them on the lobbying. I'm assuming the bill is good news.

Sounds like a victory for cigars...anything over $2 is going to see substantial financial savings.
