WOT - Kaleidoscape Home Theater?

Did anyone else notice on the very last page (Made For You) of last month's CA (with Emeril on the cover) they had that Kaleidescape DVD Storage Hard Drive thingy?

I think that's exactly what I'm looking for! I want to load up all our DVD's into one contraption that can send the movies out to one of several different tv's throughout the house.

Does anyone know about this particular unit or another that would work for what I'm trying to do?

Very interesting concept. Read about it last year.. and have been keepin gup with all the hoopla over the yr. But unfortunately priced way beyond the price range of most home theatre ppl. This is for a very high end HT. This might be the beginning of networked bases A/V systems..!

Thus is the newest craze in HT.
Theoretically you could load all your DVD's to PC and view movies from the PC. WIth higher resolution and of course with the digital audio. But you would have to have the house networked. This of course becomes another costly project.

I just looked through the thread at that AVS site and this appears to be a little out of my league for what I'm looking for. Apparantly a system like the one in the CA article starts around $22,000!

There are other options I've explored that will do what I need without all the bells and whistles for 1/4 to 1/2 that price, which will still be a very hard sell to the wife.

You can't gain resolution above the souce. However you can manipulate the source to have it appear to be better with line doubling/tripling/quadrupling if your display can handle it of course. I run 960P for DVDs via an HD Leeza and an Electrohome 8501.

AVB.. the newer HTPC I have seen have video cards capable of upconverting 480 DVD signals to a 720-1080. Of course you need to use HMDI/DVI connections..but most newer LCD and HD monitors accept these connecitons.

WOw an HD LEEZA .. thats a pricey piece of equipment..Key Digital does make some very neat products..
You must have a nice high end system..

Upconversion is line doubling et al. The resoluution of the source is being manipulated but it can't actually be increased. I was a beta tester on the original Leeza and HD Leeza so I got a pretty good deal on it.

my sony hd dvd player is a great piece of technology, plays at 1080i and 720p/i as well as 480p/i. i have a few imax dvd's at full 1080i and looks incrediable on my grand wega,a nd yes, i am using the HDMI interface for the video, and optical to the surround receiver, even thought the HDMI carries sound and video.
i like the computer idea, but would need a few terrabytes in a raid to house all the movies at full res. AVS is a great place for info on another bad hobby that make you spend $$$$.

I am in the process of adding a 2nd home theatre this time to the basement..
Oh if I only had the money!
But back to reality..currently looking at
60"+ DLP (prefer a true 1080P not the 1080p 'wobulation'.
might have to wait for a true 1080P that is within a reasonable price range.
65" mitsu good old fashioned HD RPTV CRT.

Have the receiver...floor speakers ..center speakers....rears..powered sub....

Looks like the cigar budget will be severly impacted for the next cple mos! ..NAHHHHH..always a budget for smokes!! :whistling:

There aren't any 1080P sources for a few years so you're good for awhile.

I wouldn't drop a big chunk of change on existing DVD technology right now, with HD-DVD and/or blu-ray around the corner.
