What did you want to be when you grew up?

When I was young I wanted to be a racecar driver who owned a candy factory. My wife and I do some road rallies here and there (nothing but firsts ever...), and I enjoy trying to beat my personal speed records every chance I get. If I had the money I'd be doing Gumball and Bullrun sorts of races. Someday...

When I was a little older I wanted to be the first man on Mars. The Challenger disaster didn't dissuade me, but I began to think that some Russian or Chinese guy was going to beat me to it so I eventually gave up on that idea. I'd never have survived all the math that career path would have required anyway.

In college I started out as a pre-med, biology, and psychology triple major. I wanted to be a doctor (likely a psychiatrist) until I discovered that you can't learn organic chemistry solely by studying the night before. I managed to hover above failing for about half the year and then threw in the towel after getting a particularly vicious unsatisfactory progress report. I still have that little slip of paper somewhere.

I changed my major to psychology with a minor in sociology and it was such an incredible relief. I enjoyed what I was learning, but I had no idea what in the hell I was going to do once I finished. So I took a year off from school and then went to law school.

While criminal defense seemed like the most appealing aspect of practice to me, I know enough defense attorneys to know that there's a pretty high rate of all manner of personal problems among the profession. So I figured I'd find some other aspect of law that I'd enjoy.

I didn't, but I did decide about halfway through that I wanted to do jury selection and trial consulting work. I finished law school and puttered around for a few years and eventually got my act together to apply to grad school. I'm currently studying legal psychology and if all goes according to plan, I should have my PhD in a little over a year.

I'm ready for a grown up job (though I'm still enjoying what I'm studying) and my wife has made me promise that I'm done with school, so I'm not too far off from becoming what I want to be when I get a job. I don't particularly want to grow up though.

I wanted to be a cop. Right now I am 33 and working on that goal.

Kristin

Keep going Kristen. It took me till I was 32 to finally put on the uniform and I have no regrets. I love being a Police Officer, even having to deal with
the scum of the world.

I wanted to be an engineer, like my grandfather. After 3 years of metallurgical, I decided to do something more my speed ... pure math. 3 degrees later, I have an MBA. Who knew?

A trust fund kid. I keep telling my parents that they're ruining my dream, but they don't seem to be listening! :sign:

Wanted to be a doctor (MD) when I was much younger. Didn't do it. Too late now for all intents and purposes, but I may yet move into something more useful than what I do now...
My eldest brother started studying to be a doctor at 30. Took him 7 years but he did it. It still amazes me and I guess proves that its never too late.

Brian

Oh, it could be done, but 30's much younger than a few months shy of 40.

We'll see. :)

Well... it may take you seven years, and you'd be my age when you can hang up a shingle. Not too bad, IMHO.

Incidentally, how old are you going to be in seven years if you don't go to school? ;)

I wanted to be a hotdog vender, (they had cool hats)
Then I wanted to be a chef, (they had cool hats)
Now Im a stationary engineery a job I truley love. But if I had my druthers I would fish every day but thats not goin to happen any time soon.

Race car driver.

Real life happened. I was always comfortable and interested in working with the 'elderly' population. That's what I've ended up doing. I work with the elderly and disabled low income populations through our local community action organization. It's rewarding because I can honestly say I feel as though I'm making a positive difference in peoples lives.

As for the race car driver thing, that never happened but I do own a couple old Mustangs that I drive really fast.

I wanted to fly big commercial jets, with the fancy uniforms.

Settled for marrying a flight attendant.

Rich

Edited to add Y, which I ask myself all time y did I get married?

i wanted to fly an aphache or worthog but then i found you you need 20/20 vision to be a fighter pilot and i am more like walk into the wall with out glasses so that was squashed

I wanted to be a garbage truck driver, I shit you not.

But nope, didn't work out for me, i ended up in a 5 year college program to become a Landscape Architect, and to think, i could be making $25.00 an hour driving a truck for Republic Services....

When I was 5, I wanted to be Sarge from the tv show, "Combat."

When I was 15, and bailing hay on the neighbor's dairy farm, I just wanted to work in an air conditioned office.

I left the Army after 6 years with the rank of Staff Sgt, and I now work in an air conditioned office.

Success!!

Greatest story ever!!! And I remember "Combat!," Sarge was a badass!

When I was 7, I had a Hot Wheels car that was a SWAT van. There was a little looking port on the back of the van, and when you held it up to the light, you could see one "SWATamucker" inside grabbing an M16 rifle, and another "SWATamucker" K-9 handler holding a vicious German Shepard. I used to sit and stare at that picture for hours, and dream of becoming an Officer.

Now, I'm running around in my black pajamas, blowing stuff up, and getting paid shit! Success!!

The first dream was to be an artist. My folk's wouldn't have that. In my family, you had to have callouses to be a man, or be a Priest, etc. Ignorant, but prevalent with some immigrants.

I finally went went to College, and majored in art, in my thirties.

I wanted to be a Psychologist.

And if ya know me, it would have never been a good move
