Now that my kid is mobile, it is time to secure the very few firearms in the house. Since it seems there are many gun enthusiasts with a ton of experience here, I figure I'd tap into that knowledge base.

I am curious about your thoughts on trigger locks. Do you have a favorite brand, model or style? Thoughts on a key versus combo locks?

Any information/assistance would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

My trigger lock weighs a thousand pounds (no kidding) and is lag bolted to the floor. I haven't seen a trigger lock that I'd trust.....

For pistols, I think GunVault has pretty good answers:

What Tom said. Spend the coin, buy a safe, and have total peace of mind. Your kid's life is priceless, so his or her safety should be as well.

My safe is the biggest one these guys make; turns out, their "little" one is a sweet deal for $399.00 and isn't so heavy that a truck shipment is out of the question:

My youngest is about to buy one for his apartment. That and some well placed lag bolts and you should be very secure, very good to go. It's also fire rated so you'd be surprised how many important papers you'll want to toss in the top.

I have to agree with the other brothers here about a gun vault/safe.. Best to be over safe in these situations and it should still protect your guns and your child as
they get older.

Any firearm owner should have a safe, or bare minimum, a lockbox (safes are expensive and not everyone can drop the coin right NOW... save for it, though). As far as trigger guards, I prefer rubberized cable locks that thread through the barrel. They can be used on revolvers or semi-autos with slides. They make them long enough for shotguns and other long guns. I, personally, don't like the trigger locks that sandwich the trigger. With a cable, there is no way the cylinder will close or a slide will go into battery.

The only problem with trigger locks, cables, safes etc is that if you have the gun for home/self protection you are SOL.

I purchased a Stack on gun safe at Dick's Sporting goods about 6 months ago.
I dont have any collectable or rare guns so I went without the fire rating. Nice safe very secure.
I am in the process of changing the lock from a dial type to electronic,
That is the only thing I would do different if I was going to get another safe.

I have atleast 1 (think 4 total) key padlocks from misc guns i've bought. They should all be new in the bag as i use a safe. If you're interested, ill dig them up and mail them to you.

I think most municipal police or county sheriff departments will give out free cable locks.

Kid Montana is right about locaL law enforcement providing the gun locks through a federal program.

If you cannot obtain any that way and need some, I'm sure I can dig up a couple locally and ship them to you.

Let me know.

I was going to post this yesterday but my mobile device wouldn't let me.

Stack-On makes gun cabinets as well, basically a thicker verison of your highschool locker. They come in a variety of sizes and can be had for $89.99 or so when on sale. Depending on what length fire arms you have its fairly easy to add an additional shelf for storage. A lot of it depends on your comfort level, given enough time and planning any safe can be defeated/carried off-site. My firearms are insured and my only purpose is to keep the average prowler of gaining access, given the positioning of my safe and other measures in place I don't believe I should be worried unless I am specifically targeted for that purpose.

Also, I have a handle full of cable locks as well that are yours or anyones, if they would like them.

Doc makes an excellent point. Without getting completely creepy and stalking you over the internet and looking up crime stats in your neighboorhood, I would suggest you take a serious look at why you have your firearms. IMO, if its a handgun you are concerned about, the best place to keep it is in a holster on your hip. Sleep presents some issues if your child were to wander into the room, but proper plan and dilgent execution of said plan should be able to aviod any of those.

I have the best trigger protection ever made. It was free and easy to implement.

It's called proper training. Teaching respect for firearms will aleviate any and all issues. I've had my AR at condition 3 next to my bed for over a year now and never have and never will have an issue. We've taken our daughter to the range, taught her how to hold, and what not to do with it. We've even shown her images of what a weapon can do to objects such as watermelons and gallon jugs of milk. She now respects what the firearm is capable of and won't mess with it.

This education is paramount and is the most important aspect to gun ownership.

I don't need gun locks. My kids are all growed up and when they were young never, ever, came home to an empty house. My firearms were also never forbidden fruit. They were always encouraged to learn how to use them. Hell, my grand daughter is an Annie Oakley. Out shoot most of you, probably.

gunvault makes good product for a small handgun safe. Ray, I agree with you but that being said I can get into my gunvault in less then 2 seconds no problem, which isn't much longer then it would take me to open a drawer.

Yep. Tactile feedback and subtle "beeps" when you press the keys. I have one too, with my SHTF pistols and extra mags.

I hear what the "I don't need / want gun locks" folks are saying, but I'm concerned about keeping my expensive tools out of the hands of bad guys when I'm not around.
