Cinco de Mayo (pronounced: [ˈsiŋko ðe ˈmaʝo]; Spanish for "May 5th", or literally, "Fifth of May") is a celebration held onMay 5. The date is observed to commemorate the Mexican Army's unlikely victory over French forces at theBattle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, under the leadership of General Ignacio Zaragoza. In the United States, Cinco de Mayo is sometimes mistaken to be Mexico's Independence Day—the most important national holiday in Mexico—which is celebrated on September 16.

Yeah, I have some very close friends who came from Puerto Rico. I always make a point to wish them a happy Cinco de Mayo. Makes them crazy, but they know what to expect after 40 years. Always a good laugh.

I'm all for ethnic holidays. Hell, I'm an equal opportunity celebrator. I have brisket on Passover, Lamb on Easter, Pastry on St. Joe's, Barbeque chicken on the fourth and whatever the Mexicans are having on the Cinco de Mayo. We should celebrate who we are and were. It's good for the country. Screw the xenophobes.
