We cut the chord with Comcast and now stream TV via the internet however we still use a Comcast Modem/Router and I’m interested in getting our own. What can you recommend for us to replace our rented modem/router with?
Thanks.

Arris modem with Google Wifi here (three pucks). We cut the cord a couple years back.

As with most things, it depends what you want to spend, it depends on what you want it to do.

We didn't need a mesh system, so we get by very nicely with this one;

The TP Link AC1750 is a very basic, but very solid dual band switch / router that covers the end of the house I care about very well. Solid connections out in the gazebo, too. I work wirelessly a room away, running conference calls and Skype multimedia sessions without any issues. Honestly, I haven't looked at switch / routers in a while, because I have no need; this one works great. Can't beat it for the price, IMHO.

We're still running the Comtrash modem, as we have the home phone service and we can't seem to decide on it's importance. Funny thing, our overall bill is cheaper with the home phone service ("Triple Play") than it would be if I shut off the phone service. Talked to one of the honest Comcast folks on the phone and they told me that LOTS of customers pay for the phone service to get the deal on TV channels and internet bandwidth....and never use it. That's another thread.....

But - I did pick up a TP Link modem for my son that lives locally and has Comcast internet service....and it works great. Has for a while now. Easy to recommend, not sure what spending a ton more gets you other than more speed....if your provider offers it:

That modem will run up to 300 Mbps, which covers my son's needs fine. He's a pretty avid gamer, and it has worked perfectly for his needs.

If you need voice and DOCSIS 3.1 capability (32X8 channel bonding, up to 2Gbps down), this is the one I've been thinking about;

Good luck - B.B.S.

Are you looking for a modem with telephone support..??
We don’t need a land-line jack if that’s what your asking. Our needs are simple, my wife works from home and needs to Skype, and we stream TV via the internet a and Fire Sticks. My kids are young so they are home during the late afternoon hours while my wife is still working so basically anything that can allow you to YouTube and Skype at the same time. I do t think we have a need for a Mesh WiFi system but that may change as we repurpose some rooms in the house.

I don't have any cockpit time with a mesh system, but IIRC our very own John Fields does.

If I had to pick one, I'd be very tempted to give this a try, given Amazon's return policies;

As always BBS with plenty of great info. One thing you should check out with your internet provider is if they have any data caps. We have a 2 TB cap. The closest we have come to going overThe cap is 1 TB and that was with 4 TVs streaming for month while we had visitors.

I have the MeshForce mesh system with 5 satellite units set up around the house... This system works with any internet provider, and is the best on the market today. I occasionally have to reboot the main unit, but I absolutely love this system...

I use TP-Link myself, I have one of earlier Archer C7s. Been using their Range Extenders for the past few years as well, to get better signal on the outside of the house. You can setup a faux "mesh" network by naming the Wireless Networks the same. You won't get a seamless hand off or the other benefits of mesh, but you won't have to worry about connecting to different Networks when you move around.

You know, the ability to add range extenders is a good idea since we have several areas which are under utilized but that I have plans for future use. Thanks.

I run an arris modem and a asus router. Been working pretty good with that. Still can’t break entirely away from Comcast tv, though we are down to the main box, and one smaller box and rokus everywhere else. And a Apple TV.

I did a couple different trial runs awhile back and couldn’t get use to the lack of convenience that having the box offered. Roku works pretty dang good so it’s close, but the bedroom has the worse WiFi in the place and the tv used the most there so that’s the issue.

One day I’ll invest in a fancy mesh system. Maybe that will fix it. And we could look into streaming more.
