It's time to build a new PC, as mine is getting pretty old. Unfortunately the miners have screwed up the GPU market once again, as prices are through the roof. I'm looking for something like an RX 6700, but not paying $800+ for it. Any recommendations for a decent video card? The only game I have is Flight Simulator, however I do something good for graphics, dual monitors, etc. Thoughts?

I've built Intel systems for the past 25+ years, but going AMD for the first time on this build.

Rod, AMD is considered a great card due to their GPU. Consider checking out ebay. How much memory you want on board and going to boil down to how serious you are with what you want to do. From what I see, $1400 for the 6800 RX is close. gets down to how much of the itch you want to scratch. Should add, if you go ebay, make sure the seller will accept returns, that's a biggie.

Used 1070gtx or 1080gtx. Good buys as people upgraded to the rtx models

Even a 970 or 980 gtx holds it's own at 1080p still.

I've been checking ebay, good idea on the return policy.

My current system has a 960 gtx, but I have a large 4k monitor so looking for something newer. I think I'll check out the 1080 gtx -- maybe can find one on ebay. Worst case I could use my 960 until prices drop.

I have a feeling the miners are going to continue to screw up the market through most if not all of 2022. Then there's the whole "shortage" issue going on as well.

Chip shortage should be coming to an end soon.

The 2070 is comparable to an 1080. These would be my choices. They can game at 4k but not max settings if playing newer games.

I guess my 960 gtx isn't so bad after all, at least for a temporary card. I think I'll just pull it from my current system and use it in the new one until I can get a 6800xt when their back to normal prices. I don't need the high FPS right now, more for graphics at the moment.

....it would be nice if the chip shortage was coming to an end soon, but....it's not. Not only that, it's not just chips that are in short supply. Stupid passive parts like SMT resistors and capacitors are brutal to find in production quantities. One power supply part we use was typically purchased for $0.28, and our commodity people found a few thousand....for $37.00 each. I'm not kidding. We're not seeing any real relief until 2023 or later.

I just built a high end machine for a buddy with deep pockets, and got him a nice 3080 video card, after playing the NewEgg lottery for eight months, every day. Only $1350.00.....ugh.

I'm holding off; my #1 machine is running a GTX970 and will continue running that until I can buy one that's not at heartbreaking prices. I did just put a machine together for my office, built around an AMD Ryzen 7 5700G. A very reasonable solution with decently fast integrated graphics. I'm using it in my office for circuit simulations and audio processing, but it plays COD just fine....;-) With a TB SSD and 32Gb of ram, it runs great. Very happy with that.

Lastly, a handy guide as to 'what's faster' is available over at Tom's Hardware:

I built a computer for my nephews a couple of Christmases ago, handed down a TitanXp card and upgraded my rig to a 2080Ti. This year I thought I'd give them the 2080Ti and get myself a 3080Ti. Nope, sorry kids. Graphics Card Grinch said no way - either out of stock or 100% add on price gouge. Most of the rigs I build are water cooled these days, I'd have to have them bring their rig in to retrofit a different card so I might be able to find a card and a water block before their next trip down (doesn't help that they live in WA and I'm in TX).

If there is a micro center nearby, you might consider one of their powerspec units, that have been pre built with high end video cards but not necessarily overpriced.

You can get a entire system with a 6600xt video card for $1200 and one with a nvidia 2080ti or maybe it was a 3080ti…something like that for $1500.

So even if you scrap the motherboard and ram and stuff or just upgrade it, you still get a decent vid card and a processor.
