What SMOKING music are you listening to? (2025)

A few years ago I was sitting in an airport bar and got to talking to the guy next to me for a little bit. The conversation shifted towards music and I mentioned that I was a little bit of a country singer/songwriter myself. He said "what was your name again?" and when I told him it was Eric he asked "did we go to school together?". I said unless he went to school in Ft. Oglethorpe, GA then probably not. He told me that he went to school with a guy named Eric Lee Beddingfield who ended up becoming a country singer. He showed me this video for his song "The Gospel According to Jones" and I fell in love with it immediately. The Possum himself makes an appearance in the video for the last verse.

I had to watch just to find out who the Possum was.

It's not often we're the ones informing you of music trivia (although I guess I didn't specifically reference George Jones in my post) 😆

"Possum" was famously George Jones' nickname due to his perceived resemblance to a possum in his younger age. Later in his career he was also often referred to as "No Show Jones" for obvious reasons...

You could run all the country music trivia by me that you have and I wouldn't have a clue about 95% of it. I know my lane.

I think I'll write Trump too get him to change the name from Opossum to US Possum.

So now you're making me defend my trivia crown.

Du Hast is arguably Rammstein's most famous song but those who don't speak German are missing the inside joke. Du Hast is You (familiar) have while Du hasst is You (familiar) hate. The band doesn't help much in that the song has been published with either and sometimes both spellings although the original is Du hast. I like the alternating meaning for every other verse myself. Pretty much You have me, You hate me.
