Lou Reed - Rock 'n Roll Animal (1974)
Before we get to Lou I'm gonna talk about the layout of the land that is Manhattan for those that have never been .
The main parts of Manhattan are divided up into 50 block long sections give or take.
Harlem in the north goes from165th st to 110th street
Uptown is 110th to 59th or another way to look at it is if Central Park is to the left or right of you looking north you are Uptown
Midtown goes south from 58th to 34th street and for some reason the area of 34th to 14th is called Midtown South
Going south from 14th to the tip of the Island is Downtown which includes the financial district and many of the neighbor hoods you may have heard of like Chelsea (which is a bit to the north), West Village.Greenwich Village, East Village, Washington Square, Lower East Side, The Bowery and Tribeca.
The Bowery, which means "farm" in the original Dutch was a path that connected the 22 original farms on Manhattan to the seaport on the lower east side. Foe over 200 years it was where the bums and immigrants and gangs were. The Bowery was one of the boundries of 5 points made infamous by the movie Gangs of New York. Not the best of places,
However, that began to slowly change after WW2 because there were big empty spaces with cheap rent. Small artistic communities moved in. Howard Stein's Academy of Music opened there in 1971 in an old movie theater. It sat 3400 people and offered entertainment at half the cost of what you would pay elsewhere in the city, Later it was sold and became the Palladium, This is the area that Fillmore East and CBGB's were located along with dozens of clubs that lasted a few weeks to a few years. It became the place to go to see foreign films, Avant-garde art and gave rise to the punk movement because they had a place to not only play but get paid (minimally) to do it. Today if you had half a million you might be able to buy a garage space.
It was in this neighborhood that Lou Reed recorded his album at Howard Stern's Academy of Music. He had played there before and it was a friendly audience that had mostly seen him before. With this album Reed became a Glam rocker, an Art rocker and a Rock n Roll star. Although he already led the way David Bowie didn't live on the streets like Lou did with songs like Sweet Jane, Heroin and White Light-White Heat. Helped along but the guitar work of Steve Hunter and Dick Wagner (both later members of Alice Cooper) Lou put a side of the city most knew little about right in their face.
Something else I should have pointed out. NYC blocks are very rectangular with about 20 blocks to a mile going north and south but only 5 blocks to a mile going east and west. If somebody tells you that X is only a few blocks away that could mean 200 yards or 650 yards for those 2 blocks. That's cool Ray. Thanks.![]()
