I'm sure there is a topic on the forum reference morning cigars or coffee cigars, but this has been my personal journey over the past few months as I search for my "perfect morning coffee cigar." There are few things better than sitting outside in the early morning hours, just as the sun come sup, cup of coffee in hand, enjoying a good cigar. It has long been a great enjoyment for me to watch the earth come alive with these two items in hand. A few months back I won a beautiful Diamond Crown Humidor at an auction. I did not need it, as I store my cigars in my cabinet humidor in my den, which has ample room...albeit that room is becoming less and less these days. I decided to place this new humidor in the front part of the house, as my cabinet humidor is in the rear part of the home. The placement of this new humidor is convenient to my front patio, where my morning coffee and cigar ritual takes place, so I thought this would be the perfect humidor to store my "morning coffee cigars." Thus began my quest.
To me, and that is exactly what this post is, my own personal preferences, the perfect morning coffee cigar is mild, creamy and in a smaller vitola; maybe in retirement I will take on morning Churchills, but for now it is petite corona time. My ideal size in these cigars is a 40-46 ring gauge and between 4-5 1/2" long. As I mentioned, I have been on my quest for around three months, and am still in search for this "perfect morning coffee cigar." I will likely never find the "perfect" one, as the search is most of the fun anyhow, as we all search for our "perfect cigar" that will ruin all other cigars for us, but I have had my favorites along the way. In this thread, I hope to share my journey as I continue my quest, and now I will share what I have tried thus far, and my impressions. I am going to break this down into four categories: Winner thus far, Will keep on hand, Will not keep on hand & Interested in trying.
Winner thus far:
Davidoff Winston Churchill "The Original Series" Belicoso - I love the small Belicoso size of these cigars, and they have been surprisingly complex for their size with great depth. It also doesn't hurt that I am a history enthusiast also and am a big Winston fan. They are not cheap at around $40 for a tin of 4, but they currently have the top spot.
Will keep on hand:
Davidoff Primeros - I enjoyed these small cigars by Davidoff. They are nice and mild and i a great shape for my coffee cigar at 4 x 40.
Will not keep on hand:
Macanudo Cafe Petite Corona - These were the cigars that the internet made me believe would be the winner....I am not convinced yet. They are good, and in a nice shape at 5 x 38, but there is just a flavor in them that I don't quite love. Fortunately and unfortunately I bought a whole box, so they have much time to convince me. We shall see, but for now, I would pass on more.
Perdomo Puritos - They are a nice size at 4 x 38, and cheaper than the Davidoff's, but they just didn't wow me.
Liga Privada No 9 Coronets - I knew these were going to be too small at 4 x 32, but they looked interesting and I got a tin. My intuition was correct. They have good flavor, but I constantly was getting the short filler i my mouth and it burned hot.
Fonseca Petite Corona (My Father) - First, let me say I am a big My Father fan, and have enjoyed other Fonseca vitolas form this line, this one though just burned hot and I didn't get much flavor. It was definitely not creamy like the Cedros I smoked. I have only smoked one of my five pack, so we will see if the other four can turn me on these.
Interested in trying:
Ashton Cabinet Tres Petite - I have enjoyed the Ashton Cabinet line as of late. When I started my cigar journey 20 years ago, I drifted to the Maduros as many do. As I have matured in my cigar hobby, I tend to like these mild, classic cigars more and more. I love the #4 and #6 in this line, and they are a little big for my morning coffee cigar, but this size should be perfect if it can keep the same creamy profile of the larger sizes.
Montecristo White Series - I just got a 10 pack of Rothschilds in for this cigar, and while I tried my first one last night and it did not hold up at all to the strength of my Bourbon, it is very mild so it shouldn't be expected to and I'm curious how it will pair with a coffee.
Whew, that turned into a long post, but that has been my journey so far. I hope to update this thread moving forward, but I'd also love to hear what cigars other forum members enjoy with their morning coffee...what say you aficionados?
