I spent 6 years in the Army MP Corp.
1986-1992
Sculthorpe, England
Ft. Knox, Ky
Subic Bay, Phillipines
Ft. Campbell, Ky

Operation Desert Storm
Spent several tours of duty on TDY doing various duties.

My Father is retired 1st Sgt Army Special Operations Command
My youngest Brother is currently a CPO in the Navy with SEAL Team 5 in San Diego.

So needless to say, it is a family tradition to serve in the military.

Glad this thread got topped. Navy 75-82 active, E-6 RM1(SS) (Radioman)
2 years Special Projects out of Pearl Harbor
5 years Submarine Force Pearl Harbor/Guam
4 years active reserves, back into Special Projects out of Pearl.

I loved my time in, but Congress capped the original GI Bill - use by 1989 or lose it. I burned every penny.

Robert Heinlein was right! US Citizenship should be EARNED!

I transfer from my ship to another ship in Miami this summer. I currently have 4 years sea service.

My Unit is decomissioning in July. We are the 2nd to last of our vessel type left. Our sister ship decoms in 2 weeks. So the will put us as the second oldest ship in the Coast Guard. The Queen of the Fleet is CGC Storis out of Kodiak Alaska. After we decom, I transfer to the Electronics Detachment in Panama City. My performance has finally paid off and I get an OINC type billet. Which is pretty good in the Coast Guard for an E-6.

as for me,

Currently active duty, USN

Been in 8 years, Fire Controlman First Class Petty Officer Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist (FC1(SW) for short ;) )

First 2 years Various schooling
4 years on USS Gary (FFG-51) out of Yokosuka, Japan
2.5 years currently stationed Commander, Patrol and Recon Force 5th/7th Fleet out of Misawa, Japan

Here in Jan. Looking like I'm either going to:
Afloat Planning Systems, Pacific out of Hawaii or
USS Taylor (FFG-50) Out of Mayport, FL

I am a Fire Controlman, a Petty Officer in the U.S. Navy. My work is the operation and maintenance of the weapons aboard the fighting ships of the Navy. I am a trained specialist and technical assistant in the weapons department of my ship. I am required to know, operate, and maintain intricate scientific precision instruments. To do this, I must have a thorough knowledge of the work of an Electronics Technician, Machinist Mate, and Instrumentman.

My aim in life is to know my job; to know everything that pertains to practical gunnery and ordnance. As long as there is any operation or piece of equipment I do not fully understand, my job is not complete. In the event of war, I must be prepared for any emergency. I must be capable of and competent to fill my station, or perform any operation in the weapons department of my ship; to assume command of, spot, or control the fire of any battery.

In addition to being competent to perform any operation, I will strive to know my maintenance duties so well that I may maintain the battle efficiency of my ship, even on a darkened ship, under enemy fire. This, to the end . . .

THAT THE SHIP MAY FIGHT AS LONG AS SHE IS AFLOAT!

Hoo-Rah!

The Merchant Marine are near and dear to my heart, Al. My dad served from 1941 through 1961 when he lost his leg to an accident at sea. Man, the stories he told about his ship getting strafed and attacked in North Africa. My best friend in high school got a spot in the Merchant Marine Academy and, to my knowledge, is still going to sea.

Well, since I began the poll I have to take the heat for this mistake. It's not that I forgot about you but, as an Army guy, I never knew about the Merchant Marine. I have to apologize for my ignorance.

I also want to thank you for raising awareness, Puff.

Edited to add a link to the Merchant Marine Academy for anyone who wants to know more: Link
