Tatuaje Cojonu info

This explains why the recent Cojonus have been so good! Pete owns the Tatuaje brand...

Starting in August for all future production on Cojonu, the wrapper was changed from a Viso to a Ligero wrapper. Same wrapper but the Ligero allows us to extract the color easier and adds a little extra spice.

Cojonu is graded from Rosado/Oscuro to Oscuro. Right now the color is brick red and we will do our best to continue with this but the wrapper needs time and demand has been very high.

It was a tough battle between the two at first because they look the almost the same. The Viso tasted great off the bench and the Ligero was too strong. The Viso burned perfect, but after aging the Ligero stood out. Lots of chocolate and spice.

I was afraid when tasting the Ligero wrapper fresh that it would burn the palate. Cojonu is supposed to be strong, a strength that hits you in the gut not on the palate.

It's heartening to see such consideration going into the making of a cigar. Kudos to Pete and his team. :thumbs:

Man......that would be nice! We just get a few from Pete when they are available.
I think our house fav is the Gran Cojonus, the big dog!
The wrappers look great! Very oily.........must have one soon

Cojonu is Cuban slang short for Cojonudo. I hope you won't be offended by
this but to be careful, Cojonu means.....Ballbuster! Or, to a Cuban lady,

What's up with the use of Cuban band styles?? Kind of a cheesy way to market these, IMO. Did the Altadis/Habanos SA not internationally trademark the EL bands??

Yeah I thought they looked a little cheesey at first too, especially the second "EL-style" band... Whether Altadis/Habanos SA trademarked the bands or not, I don't know -- but I think these would be similar but different... might create market confusion if Cubans were sold here legally, but...

In any event, the blender Pepin Garcia is from Cuba, their rollers are from Cuba, the cigar molds are from the same people who make 'em for Cuba... I'm guessing they are just doing things in old Cuban-style. Not a cheesey gimmick tho, these are quite nice cigars.
 
To me, there is no difference in this compared to someone using an "X" somewhere on their bands and being legally made to remove them from the market. A Dominican band Cohiba that actually says Dominican Republic and not Havana, Cuba, is similar but different too and that's considered taboo. I just think they could have found a better way to market these. Especially if they are good cigars, which from the reviews appears to be true. Why "copy" after someone else if you've got a unique product.
 
CAO did the same thing with the Anni Maduro and the Anni Cammeroon.

They look exactly like Partagas Series D #4 bands and R&J Churchill tubo bands.

I don't see anywhere on the Tatuaje reserva or Cojonu that say EL on the bands.

Because it doesnt. I love the EL band on the Cojonu. It attracts my attention and I KNOW in the States it isnt a Havana smoke. I looked at a 2001, 2003 EL band and then compared it to the Tatuaje one. They kinda look similiar but the coloring and lines in the Tat one is more bold. Either way, I like them. :D

Yeah, they kinda looked similar Mark, I had forgotten about those cigars. It just seems to me that these cigars would be better served, if they are as good as everyone says, to have come up with a unique presentation instead of jumping on the Havana bandwagon.

Yeah, I agree. But what can ya do...? I guess just toss the bands off of 'em and smoke 'em. :)

With their "Reserva SW" the "SW" stands for Sir Winston... RC 184 = Retro Cuban and 184 is the length of the cigar in millimeters. Just to give you an idea of where they are going with stuff.
 
Seems to me that the spirit of their designs is more of an homage rather than an attempt to be derivative or deceptive. This makes even more sense based on Andrew's last post.

I agree, according to the interview CA did with Pete in 2003 they are doing things Old World Cuban style to steal a quote from the article.

You can like or dislike the EL on the bands and I see Matt's point to a degree but if your marketing things Old World Cuban Style then the EL bands make perfect sense. I don't think its a "Havana Bandwagon" more than a way to let you know these cigars are born with the Havana style everyone of us love.

Some cigar MFG such as Davidoff don't like the C word and consider it to be taboo since they packed and sailed ship.

That's my 2 cents.

Our owner has had the idea up to maybe try to have Pepin make us some house brand cigars.
That would be kick ass to make that happen!
