Fan for circulation in Coolerdor?

Recently was speaking with a retailer who recommended having some kind of circulation inside my 150qt cooler. From what I understand, cigars need humidity temperature (which I have no problems maintaining), and some circulation of oxygen to age properly.

Anyway, he recommended a computer fan with the cord running through the drain and into an adaptor to plug into the wall.

Does anyone have experience doing this?

An Oust fan (minus the scented insert) works extremely well. Runs on one D battery and lasts a few months.

here's the custom bead box/fan setup I made...

works like a CHARM. Plugged into a digital timer set to turn on for 15 minutes every 6 hours

I tried the oust fan, it works well. Also, I went out and got a little $9.00 12 electronics fan at Radio Shack and hooked it up to an old cell phone charger and ran it into my cabinet used some heavy duty velcro to attach it to the wall. The adapter is plugged into a lamp timer and turns on every 12 hours for a few minutes.

Although, it may be overkill in a cooler especially if you are using beads and open it once in a while.

BTW swissy's setup is cool too.

I also went with the Oust fan in my two coolirdoors.....It works well!

Freakin guy thinks he's McGuyver!! :D

Naw... couldn't do it with chewing gum wrapper and string. Actually had to use an electric drill, which goes against the rules of the Official McGuyver Handyman's Club rules.

I would just use the oust fan, or some other battery operated fan. They work for months on one battery and you dont have to leave the plug open to run a cord to an outlet. And you dont have to worry about having your coolerdor close to an outlet.

thing I like about the plug in stuff is you can set a digital timer to run at whatever intervals you want... there's no need for it to constantly. Just occasionally to circulate the air. And the cord going out the drain is no big deal... a little food grade sillcone and presto! hole sealed.

But then again my new humi has a plug in inside the main area...

I just added an Oust fan to my Antietem for a little more air circulation. I also have a Cigar Oasis XL in there. Is having 2 fans overkill?? I figured the more air circulating the better.

I dotn know how big the Antietem is but I would say it is overkill unless it is just for storage. I dont have any fans on my humi because I open it at least once a day to get a smoke and I think this works just fine. But hey, if it gives you piece of mind then go for it. My .02

I use a few of the Oust fans in my freezerdor and they seem to work great.

Fans help keep the RH steady. You will find that the RH will vary from point to point in your cooler. Even by placing beads in separate parts of the cooler, you'll still get this. By adding a fan, you can maintain a steady RH very easily. This helps out a lot when adding cigars that are very wet.

I had a large computer fan bought from Radio Shack that looks exactly like the one Swissy has. It moves a shit load of air! It also produces a lot of heat if left on over night. If you are going to go this route, a timer is a must. I personally think brush less is the way to go though.

Here is another trick similar to what Swissy did. Take a tupperware bowl and drill holes through the bottom. Uniform distance apart is best. Use the smallest drill bit you can find. Then line the bottom of the bowl with something breathable. You can try cheese cloth, mesh screen, pantyhose, or even a cut up white t-shirt. Glue the material to the container along the bottom edge. Then cut a hole the size of the fan blades in the top. Measure and mark the mounting holes. Now take an RTV type sealant and but a small bead along the outside edge of the fan. You'll also want to put a screen on the inside lid. Now assemble the fan on the lid with long machine screws.

Let the whole thing sit out to dry. Let it sit for a few days. To check to see it there is any odor lingering, put both into separate gallon ziploc bags. Let it sit overnight and take a whiff in the AM. Once there are no more odors, you are safe to place beads in it, close the seal, and place it in the cooler. You're choice of how to wire it. Wether to pull air through, or to push air in. If you pull air through, make sure to screen the lid, or you run the risk of shooting beads through out you cooler. :whistling:

Thanks for all of the feedback and suggestions. :) Looks like I will buy a few Oust fans and put one on each end of the cooler.
