Dump truck question

Hey there BOTLs and SOTLs...wondering if anybody knows about dump trucks I saw in the northwest (Seattle area). Saw lots of them traveling the roads, many of them were "tandems"...regular dump truck towing a trailer that looks just like the back half of a dump truck. The curious part was the trailer tongue...it was like 20 feet long! What's up with that? It looked to be diamond shaped (cross-section) and possibly telescoped.

There was so much distance between the truck and trailer, it seemed like a saftey issue. There must be a reason, but I couldn't figure it out.

Anybody know?

I think I know what you are talking about. They are like that so they can unload both trailers. They dump the back one, and because of the way the tongue is between the two trailers, they can pretty much swing the back one 90 degrees perpendicular to the front trailer. This allows you to dump the front trailer.

I am sure that I got the terminology wrong, but this is what I saw all of last summer when they were building my site road.
