Sick Period

Off the top of my head Partagas, Bolivar, Ramone Allones, Trindad, and Cohiba's in the ISOM variety have a pronounced sick period. Also, Padron x000 series in Maduro have a really long sick period.

cool! thanks!

Never knew there was a term for this...let alone it was called "sick period".
I did indeed come across this several times,we all have I am sure.Since I first started way back when I noticed cigars giveing off ammonia aromas, some more than others.

I once grabbed a VSG Sorceror from a brand new box that my shop owner just opened the day before, brought it home, stored it for a week and then lit it.That thing was the worst ammonia stick I had ever tasted/smelled in my life.So bad,I couldnt smoke it,got a headache and returned the stick. This knucklehead laughed and said,"well,it is a strong cigar."He had no clue what fermentation is or what the signs are of an ageing stick. He also said he never had this complaint before .He opened the ziplock and smelled ammonia and asked if I spilled some on it or was cleaning the house when I was smokeing.

That was the first time I have had an unsmokeable stick due to high ammonia fumes.

Although fermentation, aging and other things have been mentioned,
there are some sticks that go through a sick period for the hell of it, nothing to do with age, temp, weather etc. - SLR Serie A is one that comes to mind. Anyone agree with this?

:) In Min Ron Nee's book, he goes into explanation on the various stages of cigar maturation. I know this may be looked at as a useless newb post, but my copy of Min Ron's book is still packed away. I'll dig it out shortly and type up what Min has to say about this period.
