Today round 11:30 Pgh time, Big Ben Rothesberger was in what appears to be a very serious motorcycle accident. He was not wearing his helmet. He crashed into the side of a car ( not his fault according to eye witnesses ) then proceeded to go over the handle bars and crash into the windshield of the car. He then went over the car and onto a sidewalk. At this time there are no updates on his condition. Again, according to the eye witness, he was bleeding pretty bad from his head.

I know a lot of you guys ride motorcycles, but for the life of me I can't understand why someone with his future would risk riding a bike, and on top of that not wear a helmet.

Here's hoping he will be fine for the 2006 season.
 
Agreed. The season is the least of his, or my, worries right now. I hope him a speedy recovery. Two of my best friends have been in serious motorcycle accidents, and by the grace of whatever power makes such decisions, they are both fine. I have also met the pavement a few times, and am lucky to not have any permanent damage.
BOTLs that also ride...be careful, the world is more interesting with you in it.

I love to ride; don't currently have a bike, but my philosphy is if you're gonna ride, you need to get the proper gear. It's like going hunting without ammo.

I've heard one guy say it was too hot to wear a helmet. I say, "Then it's too hot to ride."
 
I was in a bad one last October. Luckily, I was wearing my full gear or I would/could have not been here anymore. Gear means everything when riding a motorcycle.

Bike week just started here in NH. It's the 5th largerst bike ralley in the US. We don't have a helmet law here, live free or die state, don't you know. Three dead already in a horific crash involving 9 bikes and a Jeep. Only Providence knows what the body count will be by Sun.

Ben is no more important then anyone else involve in an accident. If you care about him you should care about them all.
 
Ever since I watched my old roommate lay down his bike on the highway I don't ride without my helmet, gloves, and jacket. His helmet saved his life and his leather jacket was worn through to the nylon, just imagine if that was his skin. Even if it is a short trip around town, always wear your gear.
 
I could be wrong, but doesn't a large portion of the Pro-Athlete contracts have clauses about them riding motorcycles?
 
I just wanted to add that I can't understand some of the people riding now. In Illinois you have to be 18 to ride, and it is amazing to see the amount of 18 year old kids out riding their brand new bikes with nothing but a t-shirt and sunglasses because they think they look cooler than the guy in the leather jacket and helmet. Well, you don't look too cool with road rash on your face, or worse yet, at your funeral. My first bike was a 1996 Kawasaki ZX9R, ironically my gear cost half as much as the bike did.
 
I hardly ever get my bike out any more unless I'm heading to the track. I still do the occasional ride in the weekend, but its with full leathers, back protector, armoured gloves..etc.

Hopefully he's ok.
 
Totalled one bike with all my gear on and it made me a believer. I didn't get hurt but others are not so lucky.
 
Latest report, broken jaw ( maybe they can make it look like Cowher's :laugh: ) - and some cuts on his head. Sounds like he is very lucky.
 
When I was taught how to ride, I was told by the gentleman that taught me that it's not IF you are ever going to go down while riding, but when. Ended up dumping twice to avoid becoming one with a vehicle.

And never would I ride without a helmet. Just can't understand why folks do that.

Terry Bradshaw had chewed Ben Rothesberger out for riding a while ago. Bradshaw told him to wait till he retired. Hell, with some of the crazy stuff that Bradshaw did when he played that screwed him up physically, I think I would have taken that advice.
 
This was the big discussion on the radio this morning on the way to work. It basically became the helmet debate. I always wear my gear, but if some one wants to ride without one...they are only really hurting themselves. its their choice to take the risk.

But some jack arse actually called in trying to argue the fact that a helmet only helps you out if you are going like 30mph or less. After that he was saying a helmet would make the crash worse for you because of 'brain swelling' or some bullshit. What a friggin idiot. yeah, so if I happen to low side my bike doing 80 in a corner, I should just let my head slide across the pavement, because its safer. :laugh:
 
Yea - there was some guy who called in the Pgh radio station last night and said it was a good thing he was NOT wearing a helmet, otherwise his head would have gone through the windshield and he would have broken his neck.

Although I don't want to see anyone get hurt, I don't want to hear the poor Ben story. He took a gamble ( which he is permitted to do ) and this time he lost. Lucky for him it was not too bad. People take risk everyday. They just need to be prepared to suffer the conseuqences (sp) of their risk.

Although totally off topic, it is like when a entertainer makes their political views public (like anyone really cares what they think) - Then the public says f you - I will no longer go to your concerts/movies. And they start boohooing - Of course we all have the right of free speech, but once again, be prepared to suffer the conseuquences :sign:

I lost a great friend and neighbor a couple of years ago in a similar accident someone pulled out in front of him while he was leap frogging while doing funeral procession duty. Unfortunately, he never had a chance and he was in full gear. I don't own a bike and never will so it hard for me to understand why someone doesn't fully protect themselves from what seems to be an a most certain part of riding a bike (laying it down on to avoid and collision).

Pavement doesn't seem to give much from what I can tell ;)
