To all of you motorcycle riders, with or without helmets, just come spend a fun-filled weekend with me in the Operating Room of a major Level I Trauma Center in Columbus, OH.
I can almost guarantee that a little quality time with me would change your minds about motorcycles completely.
I never preach to anyone in particular, and those are my only words of wisdom to anyone that rides. Helmets may or may not save lives, but it is all the other stuff that you cannot replace, like arms and legs, that are amazing.
I hope Ben recovers from all of this, and that this changes the minds of himself and others.
Let those who ride decide.
If you want to wear a helmet, cool, wear one. Why some feel it is necessary to dictate to others how to live their lives is beyond me. Don't pass laws telling me how to live. Some of you guys sound just like the anti-smoking people. Telling me it is for my own good. Strange.
See, this is the attitude that makes me angry. The fact is, many, if not most, people that ride motorcycles do not have insurance. I don't have any scientific data to support this, just from observation from those that I see in the hospital. But, a great deal don't have insurance.
So, what happens is that this morons come in with squished heads, and don't have insurance. Guess what? I, and everyone else that has insurance, pays taxes, and has price-inflated medical procedures DOES pay for it. So, morons that don't have helmets do affect the entire society.
I have an idea for a law that will never get passed, but should. Fine, if you want to ride a motorcycle, go ahead. But, you MUST HAVE MEDICAL INSURANCE. Bottom line, no if's, and's or but's about it. You must have insurance. And if you don't, and get caught, the motorcycle is impounded and you spend a few days in jail, and if you get caught again, you loose the motorcycle to a local hospital to sell to to recover some of the lost revenue that your buddies have caused the hospital.
Also, if you are on a motorcycle, and die, then your automatically become eligible for organ donation. No questions asked. You and your family have NO SAY IN IT. That is the price you pay for a risky personal decision.
Sorry, I will step down off my soapbox now, but these attitudes really do irritate me...
