Well it happened

Helmets save lives, that is the bottom line...

A long time ago (when I used to ride motorcycles), I was run off the road and into a telephone pole by a drunk driver. The right side of my head hit the pole and the left side hit the pavement. I was pretty broken up by the accident and spent 6 weeks in the hospital and another year recovering. I would have been dead without my helmet.

Seatbelts are mandatory, helmets should be also.
I know other people will disagree but this is just my 2cents.

I think more importantly then the helmet laws, there should be more restrictions on getting a motorcycle license. Its way too easy to get a license and motorcycles aren't something you can just get on and ride safely without experience. Sure, you can cruise around no problem and twist the throttle wide open, but what happens when an inexperienced rider has to stop quickly in a situation......

He/she 99% of the time will lock up the back brake and slide. Its little things like this most people don't know. On a motorcycle, the back break hardly does anything.

sorry, rant over :D

Ben is no more important then anyone else involve in an accident. If you care about him you should care about them all.

I don't disagree with you about everyone being important.

However, he (Ben), a pro-football quarterback, is the person that got hurt riding the motorcycle, while not wearing a helmet and is why the incident received the attention that it did and why we all know about it. It was not some person unknown to us all.

Dan Patrick just reported on ESPN radio that Ben had no M/C license. He broke two laws. In PA one must wear a helmet untill you've been licensed 2 yrs.

Doc.

I think this is a very interesting law. By the time you have worn a helmet for 2 years I would have to say the majority will continue to do so out of habit.

We had one of our motorcycle officers get into a collision while on duty, he
will be out for over a year. Then last month one of our K-9 guys got killed on his bike off duty. Both were experienced riders in full gear, just wrong place wrong time.

What about the person in the car? (I didn't look back to see if it was posted).
This person could be hurt and traumatised(sp), too.

I've worked in an ER and I ride with and without a helmet.

Some say helmets just make a better bowl for vegetable stew.
If I recall, more people survive trauma while wearing a noggin taboggin...
....only now more people are in a vegatative state. Makes for interesting research.

Oh - did they determine of alcohol was involved? I know that's another hot topic.

I guess since this is neither religion nor politics...it's not a bad to discuss.

???

The lady that drove the car is fine - I don't believe he was drinking, but it has been reported that he did not have a license.

Let those who ride decide.

If you want to wear a helmet, cool, wear one. Why some feel it is necessary to dictate to others how to live their lives is beyond me. Don't pass laws telling me how to live. Some of you guys sound just like the anti-smoking people. Telling me it is for my own good. Strange.

To all of you motorcycle riders, with or without helmets, just come spend a fun-filled weekend with me in the Operating Room of a major Level I Trauma Center in Columbus, OH.

I can almost guarantee that a little quality time with me would change your minds about motorcycles completely.

I never preach to anyone in particular, and those are my only words of wisdom to anyone that rides. Helmets may or may not save lives, but it is all the other stuff that you cannot replace, like arms and legs, that are amazing.

I hope Ben recovers from all of this, and that this changes the minds of himself and others.

See, this is the attitude that makes me angry. The fact is, many, if not most, people that ride motorcycles do not have insurance. I don't have any scientific data to support this, just from observation from those that I see in the hospital. But, a great deal don't have insurance.

So, what happens is that this morons come in with squished heads, and don't have insurance. Guess what? I, and everyone else that has insurance, pays taxes, and has price-inflated medical procedures DOES pay for it. So, morons that don't have helmets do affect the entire society.

I have an idea for a law that will never get passed, but should. Fine, if you want to ride a motorcycle, go ahead. But, you MUST HAVE MEDICAL INSURANCE. Bottom line, no if's, and's or but's about it. You must have insurance. And if you don't, and get caught, the motorcycle is impounded and you spend a few days in jail, and if you get caught again, you loose the motorcycle to a local hospital to sell to to recover some of the lost revenue that your buddies have caused the hospital.

Also, if you are on a motorcycle, and die, then your automatically become eligible for organ donation. No questions asked. You and your family have NO SAY IN IT. That is the price you pay for a risky personal decision.

Sorry, I will step down off my soapbox now, but these attitudes really do irritate me...

Did you just make that up? I have a feeling you did. Where I come from, Arizona, we have a mandatory insurance law. Of course there are those that break the law and do not have insurance. I doubt it is most or even a significant number that do not have insurance.

If your concern is financial (which it seems to be), then do a better job of enforcing the existing laws before creating a new law.

Since I am one of the morons that actually have insurance, can I be exempt from your mandates? Or better yet, maybe we can outlaw every activity that has the potential to cost taxpayers money. Like smoking!!

If you can prove that unhelmeted motorcycle riders create a disportionate share on honest taxpayers such as yourself, get to work on creating better insurance laws. Lord knows, one of the largest polital lobbiest groups, insurance, would be on your side.[/color]

These attitudes irritate the hell out of me too. I am sick and tired of self-righteous people that want to legislate every nook and cranny of everyones lives.

Leave me the hell alone. It is my head

edited for form since I can't get the quote function to work properly.
